Thirty-one Days of PKD Challenges seeks to teach the public and keep medical professionals informed about Polycystic Kidney Disease, a genetic disease, with a different activity each day of the month.
As a person ages, symptoms worsen. Fluid-filled cysts form and enlarge both kidneys, often leading to kidney failure. There are two types of PKD: Autosomal Dominant PKD (ADPKD) in adults and Autosomal Recessive PKD (ARPKD) in children.
This rare disease affects one in 20,000 people worldwide and occurs if both parents carry the gene. Most people with it will develop kidney failure before reaching age 60.
Currently, there is no cure, and the disease does not skip generations.
