Joseph Jenkins Roberts (March 15, 1809 – February 24, 1876) was born a free man in the United States and emigrated to Africa in 1829. He became the African nation’s first president, and its seventh president upon its independence. Liberia was created as a settlement of the American Colonization Society (ACS) to provide freedom and prosperity in Africa for persons of African descent. Liberia declared its independence on July 26, 1847. JJ Roberts Day is a national holiday.
