DESCRIPTION:
Human Rights Day in South Africa marks the anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre on March 21, 1960. The massacre was carried out by the police, who fired into a crowd of black demonstrators, killing 69 and wounding 180. Sharpeville marked the beginning of the fight against South African apartheid and remains one of its bloodiest demonstrations.
Human Rights Day is a national holiday in South Africa.
