On March 28, 1384, King Richard II of England issued a decree condemning the eating of cats, and cats in the West have been heaving a sigh of relief ever since! Cats are beneficial for hunting and killing mice and rats, the source of plague in Medieval Europe. By forbidding the eating of cats, King Richard ensured more cats and fewer rats were around.
