In 1983, the United States House of Representatives passed a resolution designating September as the National Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness Month.
Sickle Cell is an inherited blood-based disorder affecting hemoglobin, the characteristic of blood that makes it red. Symptoms include anemia and extreme pain when red blood cells stick together and block blood flow and oxygen in small blood vessels.
