Hitler laughed at the air assault on Britain in July of 1940. Still, the English had a secret weapon, the Dowding System, which allowed the Brits to deploy their air force in different areas of the country backed by radar. Radar warned the Royal Air Force, allowing it to become airborne and engage the Luftwaffe effectively.
On September 7, London became the target of the bombing campaigns. By September 15, 1940, the British Royal Air Force got the upper hand. Though the battle would continue into October, on this day, it became clear to the German high command that taking Britain would require more resources and time. They eventually withdrew, and Hitler's forces never did take Britain. Within 14 months, the United States would also enter the war.
A memorial day for the victims of the Battle of Britain, civilian and military, is observed each year.
