John Chilembwe was a Baptist pastor who helped lead an uprising against British colonial rule in now Malawi (Nyasaland). The uprising lasted from January 23-26, 1915. Though the revolt would fail, and Chilembwe was shot by the police and died February 3, 1915, his efforts would not be forgotten. January 16 is set aside each year as a day of remembrance of him. This is a national holiday and it was first ordained on January 16, 1995.
