On February 11, 1979, the Shah of Iran, installed by the US and UK after a successful coup in 1953 against the democratically elected government, was deposed and forced from power by a popular uprising headed by Sayyid Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini, an strict adherent to Shi'a Islam.
