National Fried Clam Day marks the anniversary of this bar appetizer arriving on the world culinary stage in 1916 via Lawrence Henry and Bessey Woodman's small store, Woodman's in Essex, Massachusetts.
Like many familiar foods, fried clams were somewhat of an accident. Chatting with friends, Henry and Bessey Woodman were trying to figure out how to get more business into their store. A friend suggested they fry the clams they had yet to shuck. At first, it seemed silly. Clams have shells. But, once the shells were removed and the meat dipped in batter and fried, a new East Coast favorite was born. They tested out their fried clams the next day at a 4th of July celebration; the rest is history.
Today, over 100 years later, you can still get the original fried clams at Woodman's. This event first appeared in 2015.
