Brazil’s history is similar to the United States in that it is a former colony built primarily through slavery. Unlike the United States, it did not require a civil war to free the slaves. Like the United States, it did have to fight for its freedom from its colonizer, Portugal.
Brazil gained its independence on September 7, 1822. Independence Week in Brazil is a week-long lead-up to its Independence Day celebrations featuring parades, fireworks, and a foot race bearing the torch of Brazilian independence.
