Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal program in the United States that provides nutritional food to low-income families. Part of becoming self-sufficient is being healthy, and food is where that starts. Many low-income families cannot afford three meals a day. Schools often provide breakfast and lunch to disadvantaged children, and nutrition is essential to their physical and cognitive development.
To raise awareness about the importance of families eating together and nutrition in maintaining health and growth, SNAP created National Be a Food Hero Month in 2009. Families are encouraged to share meals and learn about nutrition this month.
