On August 15, 1947, the UK Parliament officially declared India an independent nation no longer under its colonial rule. It would take another two years for the Indian constitution's ratification. India fought hard to gain independence with the non-violent movement led by Mahatma Gandhi.
Mahatma Gandhi's birthday (October 2, 1869) is celebrated annually in India as a national holiday and acknowledged worldwide by civil rights activists. He continues to be one of the most revered people in 20th Century history and an example to all people worldwide seeking freedom from colonialism, oppression, apartheid, and injustice.
