International Women's Day celebrates the achievements of women and a historic struggle for equal rights.
Equality for women means progress for families big and small. Countries that have more gender equality enjoy better economic growth. This is a day to recognize the importance of mothers, wives, sisters, girlfriends and co-workers and the contribution they make to society.
This event commemorates the March 8, 1857, female garment worker's protest in New York City. They sought humane working conditions and wages commensurate with their labor. International Working Women's Day was officially declared in 1910 at a conference of women in Helsinki, Finland. In Russia, this is a national holiday.
