DESCRIPTION:
Today marks the anniversary of the 1861 issuance of the green currency in the United States nicknamed 'Greenback'. These were demand notes, and did not carry interest. A demand note means their value remained constant at the amount printed on them, even today. This was a new concept in American currency.
Greenbacks were issued to fund the Civil War.
