For Hindus, Ekadashi is a sacred event and falls into two categories: monthly and annually. Lord Vishnu is honored monthly on Ekadeshi. Annually the event is expanded during the months of February or March for Ekadeshi of Phalgun Shukla Paksha. In the Hindu calendar this celebration falls between Maha Shivratri and Holi.
Each observance day is marked with by a day-long fasting in honor of Lord Vishnu according the strict rituals, rules and regulations. The purpose of fasting is to show sacrifice in order to receive the love and affection from the Hindu god Lord Vishnu.
