DESCRIPTION:

Railway Heritage Picnic Day, or simply Picnic Day, is celebrated in Australia's Northern Territory and coincides with official bank holidays in the UK, selected provinces, and commonwealth countries.

Australia's Northern Territory's Railway Heritage Picnic Day marks the freeing of indentured Chinese laborers, at the time referred to as Coolie (British slang for Asian indentured servant), were under contract with the North Australia Railway. Like in the United States, much of the railway track was laid by Chinese laborers; it was backbreaking work, and many did not survive.

In 1888, after completing the first part of the railway, the Governor of the Southern Territories reversed its policy of requiring Asian workers to leave Australia upon job completion. Instead, he gave them a choice, to return home or become part of Australian culture.

Upon being granted freeman status, many Asian laborers chose to stay in Australia and build a life. How did the former indentured servants celebrate? They had a picnic in Adelaide, thus Picnic Day!
