About National Potato Day

DESCRIPTION:
National Potato Day honors the versatile root popular the world over. Potato starch packs more vitamins and minerals than other carbohydrates, including wheat and barley. Because of this and its ease of cultivation, potatoes quickly became a staple of European diets once introduced.
Potatoes are native to South America, most notably Bolivia and Peru, and were brought back to Europe by Spanish Conquistadors in 1536.
In 1589, Sir Walter Raleigh brought the potato to Ireland. By 1621, potatoes returned to the New World and arrived in North America.
The potato was the first organic crop cultivated and grown in space in October 1995.
The Inca were the first to cultivate potatoes between 8,000 and 5,000 BC.
