The Pharmacists Planning Service, Inc. sponsors Herbal Prescription Awareness Month.
With the rise in over-the-counter supplements and the increased reliance on prescription drugs, hospitals and doctors are seeing a marked increase in illnesses resulting from herbal medicines interacting with prescription drugs.
Herbal medicines can interact with prescription drugs in three ways:
• Causing an exaggerated response to the effect of the prescription;
• Counteracting the effect of the drug;
• Inhibit absorption of a prescription by the body leading to the patient not getting enough medicine.
This month teaches about herbal medicine's side effects and potential interactions and the prescriptions you take. Check with your pharmacist and ask for a list of any herbs known to cause issues with your medication.
