On July 30, 1778, despite being in the height of the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress unanimously voted to side with ten whistleblowers who had reported misconduct committed by the Continental Navy's Commander in Chief. Congress sanctioned the Commander and paid for the whistleblowers' defense against him, declaring:
"That it is the duty of all persons in the service of the United States, as well as all other inhabitants thereof, to give the earliest information to Congress or any other proper authority of any misconduct, fraud, or misdemeanors."
National Whistleblower Day recognizes the sacrifices and courage of whistleblowers and their enduring importance to the health and safety of our nation. It also marks the anniversary of adopting the National Whistleblower Law of 1778.
