Established in 2010, Manuary™ is dedicated to raising funds to supporting cutting edge research and improving clinical care for patients suffering with head and neck cancer. Men are four times more likely to acquire this type of cancer. Support through the month is shown by allowing your beard to grow. That's right gentlemen, you have an excellent excuse not to shave for 31 days!
The ultimate goal of Manuary is to improve cure rates and quality of life for patients suffering with this disease.
Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Historically linked to tobacco and alcohol use, there are new found associations linking it to the human papilloma virus (HPV), which are on the rise.
Head and neck cancers, as well as their treatment can have a profound negative impact on patient quality of life, as facial appearance, voice, breathing and swallowing can all be compromised.
Survival with contemporary treatment consisting of radiation, surgery and/or chemotherapy can be successful; however up to 50% of patients with advanced cancers die from the disease.
