Apple launched its first emoji calendar on July 17, 2002. Emojis have become central to our communication and derived from computer shorthand used in the early days of the Internet. Currently there are over 1800 emojis used throughout the world. World Emoji day was created by Jeremy Burge in 2014, founder of Emojipedia. He chose the day to mark the 2002 anniversary.
Each year since the launch of World Emoji Day, Emojipedia runs the World Emoji Awards recognizing the best and most popular emojis of the past year.
