Wrong-Way Corrigan Day celebrates the anniversary of the New York to Dublin flight by Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan.
On July 17, 1938, Corrigan tricked the US Government authorities. They insisted he could not fly to Dublin in his nine-year-old plane because it was too old. Not to be deterred, Corrigan filed an alternate flight plan to fly west across the US to Long Beach, California. The government was quite surprised when he landed in Dublin 28 hours and 13 minutes after takeoff. Corrigan became an instant American and Irish folk hero by successfully hoodwinking the US government.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) did not exist in 1938. It was created on August 23, 1958.
