Hariyali ( greenery) Teej (third day) is an important holiday for married Hindu women seeking marital bliss and the well-being of their husbands. Hariyali Teej is the 3rd day of the first fortnight in the Hindu month, Shravan (Sawan).
It is a celebration of the earth's renewal after a very hot and dry summer. Goddess Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva, is also worshiped on this day.
Legend has it that the Goddess Parvati once underwent a self-imposed penance to demonstrate her devotion to Lord Shiva and was born and reborn on earth 108 times before he took her as his wife. The day was "Teej of Shrawan Month" when Lord Shiva took her as his wife, then Devi Parvati promised every woman who invokes Parvati would experience marital bliss.
Women dress up in colorful clothes, wear jewelry, apply mehandi, wear colorful bangles and fast the whole day. The Hariyali Teej celebration comprises dancing and singing.
PLEASE NOTE:
We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Names of months and holidays and the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar may vary widely from one calendar to the next. Determine the proper calendar before attending local events.
