DESCRIPTION:

The summer solstice is the official start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. During this time in the northern hemisphere, the sun is situated higher in the sky, and the angles of the sun's rays hit the earth directly. Many festivals are associated with the summer solstice.

The word solstice comes from the Latin solstitium, which means to stop the sun. The sun's zenith during this time reaches the most northern part of the earth and veers away from the Equator, making the northern hemisphere experience warmer months.
