The Mughal Emperor Jahangir ordered the torturing of Sikh gurus after their preaching resulted in conversions. As part of his torture, Guru Arjan Dev sat on a burning hot sheet while hot sand poured over him. On the fifth day, his torturers took him to the river, where he disappeared.
