National Donut (Doughnut) Day commemorates a 1938 marketing campaign deployed by the Salvation Army and created by Dr. Morgan Pett during WWI. National Donut Day began as a gesture by Morgan Pett, a military doctor treating wounded soldiers during the First World War. As he was helping the soldiers, he would give a donut to raise their spirits. One soldier who particularly appreciated the gesture was Lieutenant General Samuel Geary. He and Pett later created a fundraiser to make sure every injured soldier treated received the ‘edible lifesaver’ we call a donut. This gesture caught the attention of the Salvation Army, who, in turn, began using it with the soldiers assigned in France starting in 1938. During National Donut Day, shops offer free donuts to customers.

Fish & Chips Day, Ntl. (UK): June 6

Not to be confused with Friday Fish Fry Day (a different sponsor) on the first Friday of June, National Fish & Chip Day first ran in 2015 in the United Kingdom and marks the anniversary of D-Day on June 6, 1944.

Fish and Chips played a big part in keeping morale up during WWII. The day honors their place in British history and this historical event. NEODA, the National Edible Oil Distributors Association, sponsors the event.

Fish and Chips are considered the national dish of the United Kingdom.

Food Safety Day, World: June 7

Improving food safety is crucial as it directly affects people's health and wellbeing. Consuming unsafe food can lead to foodborne illnesses, often caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemical substances. These illnesses, of which there are an estimated 600 million cases annually, pose significant health risks, especially to vulnerable and marginalized populations such as women, children, people affected by conflict, and migrants. Notably, about 420,000 people die each year after eating contaminated food, with children under 5 years carrying 40% of the foodborne disease burden. Food safety measures ensure that food remains safe at all stages of the food chain, from production, harvest, processing, storage, and distribution to preparation and consumption. By preventing, detecting, and managing foodborne risks, we can contribute to food security, human health, economic prosperity, market access, tourism, and sustainable development. World Food Safety Day, observed on June 7th, is facilitated jointly by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This day aims to inspire action to improve food safety globally, raise awareness about the importance of food safety in the public agenda, and reduce the global burden of foodborne diseases.

VCR Day: June 7

The videocassette recorder (VCR) allowed people to record and play their movies at home without a projector. The (VCR) changed movie viewing by families. Introduced in 1956, the VCR was further developed in 1970. The advent of cable television and more channels during the 1980s made owning a VCR necessary to record programs or play your films. The VCR remained a key component of entertainment systems through the 1990s. It was replaced by DVD players, which were soon replaced by DVR systems. VCR technology involves having a mechanical device that records sound and images in analog form on a video cassette. Convenience was its greatest asset as it can be paused and played again anytime wanted.

Business Etiquette Week, Ntl.: June 2-8

I remember attending my first networking event as a salesperson in 1993 and was entirely overwhelmed by the idea. "What does networking mean?" I asked. "How do I do it, and is there a proper way to do it or not to do it?" Like most people, I rarely received answers to my questions, so I learned. Jumping in, making many mistakes, and finally researching proper etiquette for business. My fumbling in those first few years paid off. I was quite successful in media sales, and it was due to networking and following established protocols. What worked in the US, however, only sometimes works elsewhere. Business etiquette changes from nation to nation. My second lesson in business etiquette came through a friend who recently completed her Ph.D. in international diplomacy. To get LEEP Calendar off the ground, I took a good-paying job in the Middle East and spent a large percentage of my paycheck, weekends, and evenings building the company over four years. In the weeks leading up to my arrival later in the summer of 2014, I discovered how to "open mouth and insert foot" quite well. What exists as good manners in the United States sometimes fails to translate overseas. Now I'm learning business etiquette again, with a Middle Eastern flair. It is easy to offend inadvertently. What did I do? In my excitement and attempt to explain what I would be doing to Westerners, I worded it so that, upon reflection, coming from an American would seem arrogant and dismissive to another culture. "Laura, you are going to offend them with that statement," my friend, an expert in the culture, scolded me. "But, I was just trying to explain it so people here will understand it," I protested. I thought I was complimentary by being excited and simplifying my job role. It turns out it would be taken offensively. Americans have a reputation for being arrogant overseas, so a douse of humility goes a long way. "That's why you're in marketing and I'm in diplomacy!" she added. "You need to learn when to sell and when to respect." Aye, meu Deus! For anyone in business (or politics), knowing the proper protocols in a situation can mean the difference between success and failure. Etiquette exists to help us navigate various social situations successfully, even if we're unfamiliar with the culture, whether national or corporate. It provides us with a roadmap of acceptability that is familiar and respectful. Dog Bite Awareness Week, Ntl.: June 2-9

More than 5,400 postal employees were attacked by dogs in the United States in 2021. From nips and bites to vicious attacks, aggressive dog behavior poses a serious threat to postal employees and the public. To highlight the enormity of this serious issue, the U.S. Postal Service is providing information on the do’s and don’ts of responsible dog ownership as part of its annual National Dog Bite Awareness Week public service campaign. “Every year, thousands of postal employees are attacked by dogs as they deliver America’s mail. And while it’s a dog’s natural instinct to protect their family and home, we ask all customers to act responsibly by taking safety precautions with their dogs while the mail is being delivered,” said USPS Employee Safety and Health Awareness Manager Leeann Theriault. “When a carrier comes to the residence, keep the dog inside the house and away from the door — or behind a fence on a leash — to avoid an attack.” Cleveland, Ohio is the city with the most postal dog attacks at 58 in 2021, followed by Houston, Texas, Kansas City Missouri, Los Angeles California and Louisville Kentucky.

Rip Current Awareness Week, Ntl.: June 2-8 (est)

The second week of June is Rip Current Awareness Week, an public service campaign supported by the US Government’s National Weather Service and other agencies. Most rip current fatalities each year are visitors from non-coastal locations. Rip currents are powerful currents of water moving away from shore and are the leading surf hazard for all beachgoers, especially for weak or nonswimmers. The United States Lifesaving Association states that 80 percent of surf beach rescues are attributed to rip currents. Over 100 people die annually from drowning when they cannot escape a rip current. Rip currents form when waves break near the shoreline, piling up water between the breaking waves at the beach. One of the ways this water returns to the sea is to form a rip current, a narrow jet of water that moves swiftly offshore, roughly perpendicular to the shoreline. Under most tide and sea conditions, the speeds are relatively slow; however, under a particular wave, swell, and beach profile conditions, their speed can quickly increase to become dangerous to anyone entering the surf, even the most experienced swimmers. Rip currents can be very narrow to hundreds of meters wide. The seaward pull of rip currents varies from just beyond the line of breaking waves to hundreds of yards offshore.

Theater Understudy Appreciation Week: June 2-8

Understudy Appreciation Week celebrates the often overlooked role of understudy. A theater understudy is a performer who learns the lines, blocking, and choreography of one or more positions in a stage production, with the primary purpose of being prepared to step in and perform those roles in case the leading actor is unable to complete due to illness, injury, or other unforeseen circumstances. Understudies are essential in ensuring the smooth running of a theatrical production, as they provide a backup in emergencies. Understudies typically attend all rehearsals, closely observing the leading actor and taking notes on their performance, so they can accurately replicate the role if needed. They may also participate in understudy rehearsals to practice their assigned roles with other cast and crew members. In some cases, an understudy might also be a part of the ensemble or have a minor role in the production, allowing them to be actively involved in the show while still being prepared to step into a more prominent role if required. It's important to note that understudies are different from standbys and swings. Standbys are performers exclusively dedicated to covering the lead role or roles, while swings are responsible for covering multiple ensemble tracks and sometimes principal roles in a production. On the other hand, understudies often have their own parts in the show in addition to learning the roles they are understudying. Being an understudy requires immense dedication, adaptability, and professionalism. They seamlessly step into a role at a moment's notice while still delivering a high-quality performance for the audience.

Canadian Music Week is Canada’s leading annual entertainment event dedicated to the expression and growth of the nation’s music, media, and entertainment industries. Combining three information-intensive conferences, a trade exposition, a film festival, a comedy festival, four awards shows, and the nation’s largest new music festival, CMW occurs over five days. Gnome Week: June 5-8

Gnome week is celebrated in early June and honors Brasserie d'Achouffe breweries and beers rather than actual gnomes. Belgium legend states that gnomes (or chouffes) brewed beers in Belgium called Brasserie d'Achouffe, where this famous beer originates. We'll leave the judgment on whether or not that legend is true to you. Instead, we intend to toast Gnome Week with a big mug of delicious Belgian beer. Cheers!
