Mediterranean Diet Month, Intl.: May

06:20 AM | -
Created in 2009 and sponsored by non-profit Oldways, International Mediterranean Diet Month focuses on healthy eating through whole-natural foods low in sodium and containing good fats. Precisely the kind of food generations of people have lived on. Available resources include HealthyDiningFinder.com, a list of casual-dining chain restaurants offering dishes that adhere to Med Diet standards based on healthy fat and sodium levels. Mediterranean Diet continually tops the list for healthy eating plans due to its accessibility, affordability, and taste! Dishes include sliced fresh tomatoes topped with crumbled feta cheese and sautéed spinach with lemon and couscous. Hundreds of scientific studies report that the healthy Mediterranean Diet and its lifestyle practices reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection & Prevention Month: May

06:20 AM | -
Skin cancer affects people of all ages. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer over a lifetime; 13 million Americans live with a history of non-melanoma skin cancer, and nearly 800,000 Americans live with a history of melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Skin cancer is a chiefly lifestyle disease and is highly preventable. The most common cause is exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. How to participate? Encourage families to adopt good habits together, like wearing sunscreen and limiting their time in the sun. Motivate teachers and administrators to teach kids about the harm of UV radiation and why it's essential to protect yourself. Identify youth leaders in your community who can talk to their peers about taking steps to prevent skin cancer. Partner with a local hospital, state fair, or similar organization to host a skin cancer screening event. Add information about skin cancer prevention to your newsletter. Tweet about Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. Host a community event where families can learn how to prevent skin cancer. Older Americans Month: May

06:20 AM | -
Older Americans Month is an annual observance held in May to celebrate and recognize the contributions of older adults to society. This month-long celebration aims to raise awareness about the issues affecting older adults and to promote their well-being, engagement, and inclusion in their communities. The history of Older Americans Month dates back to 1963 when President John F. Kennedy designated May as "Senior Citizens Month" to honor older Americans and to draw attention to their needs and accomplishments. Later, in 1980, President Jimmy Carter changed the name to "Older Americans Month." Each year, the Administration for Community Living (ACL), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, leads the observance and chooses a theme to guide the celebrations and activities. These themes typically focus on aspects of aging, such as healthy living, financial security, caregiving, and civic engagement. Throughout the month, various organizations, including community centers, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations, organize events and activities to support older adults and their families. These events may include workshops, health fairs, intergenerational activities, fitness classes, volunteer opportunities, and social gatherings. Older Americans Month is an opportunity to recognize the valuable contributions of older adults to our society and to ensure that they continue to thrive and have access to the resources and support they need. It is a time to celebrate their achievements, share their stories, and advocate for policies that promote their well-being.
