Rogation Sunday is traditionally marked the fifth Sunday after Easter and three days before the anniversary of the final Ascension of Christ to Heaven in the Christian faith. The tradition was first practiced in the fifth century by monks in France and included singing the liturgy and fasting. The word rogation means "asking" from the Latin "rogatio."

Yom HaShoah (IL): May 5/6

Yom HaShoah is Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day and a state holiday. It is a day of mourning for the 25 percent of the global Jewish population targeted, detained, and killed under Nazi German rule in the 1930s and 1940s. The Jewish community represented the largest targeted group in the Holocaust and accounted for 50 percent of all victims. Though this is a secular and not religious observance, it follows the Jewish tradition of beginning at sundown and going until sunset the next day.

Beverage Day, Ntl.: May 6

National Beverage Day occurs each year in May. It is likely this event first ran in the early twentieth century (1921) as part of a promotion by a bottling plant Re-Ly-On Bottler during Prohibition to assure the public of the safety of bottled drinks. At the time, food-borne diseases were common in unpasteurized beverages. Alcohol killed bacteria, but due to the Volstead Act was now illegal. The creation of Bottled Carbonated Beverage Day (later shortened to Beverage Day), espousing the virtues of carbonation in eliminating bacteria, was the focus of the campaign. In 1925 the association representing commercial bottlers chose the first Wednesday of May for their annual campaign. National Beverage Day celebrates what we drink, from water and soda to milk, juice, and beer. Several restaurants around the United States and Canada mark this day by offering free drinks with meal purchases. On National Beverage Day, it doesn’t hurt to ask where you dine today if they offer complimentary beverages. Note: The traditional date for this event is the first Wednesday of May each year. Sometime in the last 30 years, people began marking it on May sixth. There is no historical context, patent, or organization sponsoring the event to tie it to May sixth.

Fall Labour Day (AU-NT, QLD): May 6

Labour Day in Australia is a national holiday, but it is complicated as each province celebrates on different days, which can occur in March, May, or October. West Australia, Tasmania, and Victoria provinces observe in March, and Queensland and the Northern Territory mark it today. Labour Day represents the international celebration of organized labor and was conceived first in North America. American and Canadian unions conference in 1884 declared May 1, 1886, as a day of strike action supporting the eight-hour day. In Chicago, a crowd of 80,000 workers was attacked by police, and six workers were gunned down. In subsequent protests, another 11 workers were killed. A further seven workers were arrested, of whom four were hanged, and a fifth killed himself to cheat the noose. Two others received life sentences. In Australia, the Sydney Morning Herald reported in 1890 that in Vienna, the wealthy business owners and elites were so unnerved by worker support for May Day that they placed their valuables in banks' custody. Two years earlier, Australian workers rallied to the cause of British dockworkers during the famous Dockers Strike of 1888. Of $48,000 contributed from overseas, more than $30,000 was sent by Australian workers. In 1891 squatters in Queensland determined to break the Shearers union employed scab labor. The Shearers and the Queensland government sent police and armed troops to arrest strikers. A call to create an international day during the nineteenth century failed due to ideological splits within the trade union movement. May Day gathered in strength in Australia and is now part of the worldwide celebration recognizing labor. However, Australia's territories maintained state-supported Labour Days throughout the year.

International No Diet Day: May 6

Sponsored by ISAA, the International Size Acceptance Association, International No Diet Day promotes size acceptance and seeks to end weight-based discrimination worldwide using advocacy and visible, lawful actions. British citizen Mary Evans Young created International No Diet Day in 1992. Young was the director of Diet Breakers in the UK and saw a need for women, especially, not to be ashamed of their bodies. It quickly became an International sensation with annual observances in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Israel, Denmark, and Brazil. The symbol of this event is a light blue ribbon. Today restaurants globally observe this day by focusing on healthy, tasty food that satisfies and doesn’t mean diet. It’s about enjoying food and your body, regardless of size or shape. The National Organization for Women also sponsors International Love Your Body Day in October.

Management Accounting Day, Intl.: May 6

My degree is in business and marketing. However, I disliked accounting so much that I spent years figuring out how to get a business degree without taking it. Who calls a debt, credit, and a credit a debit? That made no sense to me. Calculus makes sense. Geometry makes sense. Accounting? No way. It is a foreign language. I finally had to buckle down and take three semesters of accounting and one of finance to achieve my desired degree, a Bachelor of Science in Business and Marketing. And I did fair in the courses, getting As and Bs. But, to this day, I thank God for people that love accounting, the checks and balances, the neat little columns that need to add up. We should all do what we enjoy, no? Today is about showing appreciation for the men and women who tackle the balance sheets, produce financial statements, and help ensure we stay black rather than red. Today we honor Management Accounting Professionals throughout the world. Thank you! Business (and my sanity) wouldn’t survive without you! This event began in 2012.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Current estimates are that one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is the most common for adults between 25 and 30.

He is associated with the sect of Judaism practicing mysticism, is guided by kabbalah, and is instructed in the Zohar.

Computer, Choose Privacy Week: May 1-7

The American Library Association is on the frontline of privacy protection, protecting each patron's right to search for information free from surveillance. The freedom to read and receive ideas anonymously is at the heart of individual liberty in a democracy, and librarians defend that freedom daily. National Choose Privacy Week is an annual educational initiative of the American Library Association designed to teach people how to safeguard their privacy online. As the Library Bill of Rights states: "Privacy is essential to the exercise of free speech, free thought, and free association. Lack of privacy and confidentiality chills users' choices, suppressing access to ideas. The possibility of surveillance, whether direct or through access to records of speech, research, and exploration, undermines a democratic society."
