Black Mothers Bailout Week: May 5-11

Created in 2017, Black Mothers Bailout is a nationwide campaign to bail out as many mothers awaiting trial and in jail because they cannot afford bail so they can spend Mother's Day with their children. Thousands of mothers sit in jail simply because they cannot afford to pay bail while awaiting trial. The impact on families and communities is extreme. Jobs and incomes are lost, homes are lost, families are divided, and the women haven't been convicted of anything, only arrested. Because it can take months to go to trial, many of these women also risk losing their children. This event seeks to raise awareness of the National Bail Fund, encourage donations and buy the freedom of these women.

Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week (US/CA): May 5-11

Children's Mental Health Awareness Week occurs during the first full week of May and is observed in Canada and the United States by various organizations. Children's Mental Health Day occurs on Thursday during the week. It is also known as the Green Ribbon Campaign, a positive message campaign designed to provide hope and funding for resources dedicated to children's mental health. Preparing for an emergency is something that everyone has a responsibility to do. This year, Canadians are encouraged to learn about the specific risks and hazards in their regions and the actions they can take before an emergency to help reduce the impact of a disaster. To strengthen Canada’s emergency management approach, our government is shifting from a reactive model to one that allows us to predict better, plan for, and prevent natural disasters and the costs Canadians suffer. To this end, we are investing $200 million over five years in the National Disaster Mitigation Program to support provincial and territorial flood mitigation efforts. Through the Get Prepared campaign, our government has worked with provincial and territorial partners to encourage Canadians to know the risks, make a plan and get an emergency preparedness kit. With basic emergency preparedness in place, the next step is to take action to reduce the threats most likely to affect your family and community. Everyone can take simple steps to reduce disaster risk. For example, if you live in a flood-prone area, you can help prevent flood damage by using a weather-protection sealant around basement windows and ground-level doors. Make sure drainage around your home helps move water away from the building. Emergency management is a joint responsibility. This week, we also take the opportunity to recognize and thank first responders, volunteers, community leaders, non-governmental organizations, and authorities at all levels of government for their support in emergency management. National Hug Holiday Week honors Older Americans Month. It seeks to increase awareness of the need for hugs, fellowship, and volunteer support for the elderly and individuals in senior and long-term care facilities. Senior and long-term care facilities are invited to host community Hug Centers to provide a safe place for huggers to gather and fill their hug prescriptions. In addition, sites are encouraged to celebrate HUG DAY every month as a facet of the overall care plan to enhance the quality of life through the simple, compassionate hug gesture. Operation: HUG DAY is a great way to include the community. Huggers of all ages are invited to join the Hug Squad and go on Hug Patrol Project to share hugs and fellowship with the elderly at participating Operation: HUG DAY and community hug center sites.

It only takes one storm to change your life and community. Hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones are nature's most powerful and destructive phenomena. They're the same thing—location determines which word describes it. Hurricane is the word for these storms in the Atlantic and northeast Pacific oceans near Japan and SE Asia. If it occurs in the northwest Pacific ocean, we call it a typhoon; in the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean, it is called a cyclone. You must prepare if you live in an area prone to these destructive storms. Dangerous flooding, destructive winds, and tornadoes from these storms threaten even areas well away from the coastline. Created by the Neuropathy Association in 2014, National Neuropathy Awareness Week focuses on patient care, research, and cures. Peripheral neuropathy, or peripheral nerve damage, impacts over 20 million Americans, making it one of the most common chronic diseases and a leading cause of adult disability. Neuropathy disrupts the body’s communication with its muscles, organs, and tissues. Symptoms can include numbness, tingling, weakness, and pain, often beginning in the hands and feet. With early diagnosis, quality of life can be restored. If ignored, symptoms can intensify to loss of sensation, weakness, unremitting pain, or disability.

National Prevention Week was first organized in 2011 to allow schools to participate in a drug prevention-themed event before the school year ends, raising awareness in students of all ages. The percentages of marijuana, cigarette, and alcohol experimentation among youth increase between spring (April and May) and summer (June and July,) and the timing of National Prevention Week helps to educate young people and their families at this crucial time of year.
