Alien Day (2016): April 26

Alien Day first ran in 2009 and was a single-day event for the re-release of the Aliens comic strip on May 25 by Dark Horse Comics on the 30th anniversary of the 1979 release of the film Alien. 20th Century Fox saw an opportunity and picked up the one-day event in 2016, celebrating the sequel’s 30th anniversary, and playing on April 26, which loosely coincided with the moon (LV-426 moon) on which the alien pods were first discovered. Each year since the entertainment studio uses the day to delight its fans and release alien-related merchandise.

Arbor Day (Date May Vary by State): April 26

It was on January 4, 1872, Detroit native and journalist J. Sterling Morton first proposed a tree-planting holiday to be called "Arbor Day" at a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture in Nebraska. He and his wife loved trees, and especially in the wind-prone areas of the American mid-west, the trees became essential in providing shelter, keeping soil secured, and for fuel. After some debate, the first American Arbor day occurred on April 10, 1872. Prizes were offered to counties and individuals for planting the most significant number of trees, and over one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day. Today we celebrate Arbor Day on the last Friday in April in honor of J. Sterling Morton's birthday, April 22, 1832.

Chornobyl Disaster Remembrance Day, Intl. (1986): April 26

On April 26, 1986, reactor number four at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant outside the city of Pripyat exploded. It is the most significant nuclear accident to date. In 2016, the United Nations set aside April 26 each year as International Chornobyl Disaster Remembrance Day. It is a day to remember the impact of the disaster on the environment, the town, and the 54 people who died as a result of the accident. It was 1:23 A.M. on April 26, 1986, during an experiment, a significant explosion occurred at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Unit 4, an RBMK 1000-type, graphite-moderated nuclear power reactor in Pripyat. The initial blast dispersed radioactive particles over nearby towns, farms, and eventually to many other countries. Five hundred thousand brave firefighters, engineers, technicians, and emergency workers worked for over six months to minimize one of the worst civilian nuclear disasters in history. Radioactivity emanating from the Chornobyl disaster has been detected in Belarus, Poland, Russia, and in Scandinavia.

Confederate Memorial Day (US-AL)(1865): April 22*

Confederate Memorial Day occurs in several former states of the Confederacy on different days of the year. In some cases it is no longer referred to as Confederate Memorial Day but rather as a state holiday. It is an official state holiday in most and honors the men who died fighting for the Confederacy during the American Civil War, 1861-1865.

The dates are as follows:

Alabama: fourth Monday in April
Mississippi: Last Monday in April
Tennessee, Kentucky, and Louisiana: June 3 on Jefferson Davis's birthday, 1808
North and South Carolina: May 10
Anniversary of the death of General "Stonewall" Jackson in 1863 Texas: January 19

Birthday of Robert E. Lee 1807 Due to the 400-year legacy of slavery (ending in 1865) and state-supported racial segregation (ending in 1964), this event is highly contentious and seen as a celebration of racism by many critics. Detractors insist this plays into existing racism and celebrates white supremacy and slavery.

Proponents of the observance insist that the Confederacy played a part in shaping who we are, its ramifications, and its contributions continue today. To deny a portion of our past, good and bad, is selective censorship. On the contrary, this event can be used to explore the unspoken but oft-felt prejudices and perceived reality that political correctness squelches.

Whether you side with the detractors or the proponents, the best way to acknowledge this month is to spend some time reading the Constitution of the United States and learning history. History, not social studies. A great place to start is with Howard Zinn's People's History of the United States, which some states, including Arizona, have tried to ban from their schools. Why? Because it is a history of the American people, not the leaders, and looks at the nation from the perspective of the 99%, the immigrants, migrant workers, women, religious minorities, slaves, the common man.

Detroit Music Awards (US-MI): April 26 (est)

The Detroit Music Awards Foundation (DMAF) was chartered in 1988 by a distinguished group of Detroit music and media professionals. The fledgling group held its first award show in 1992 at Detroit's Music Hall and moved to the State Theatre, its present location, in 1993. In 1998, the organization merged with the Metro Times-sponsored Detroit Music Awards. Now, the Detroit Music Awards Foundation is a single entity presenting the Detroit Music Awards each spring. In 2005, the ceremony was the opening event for the Motor City Music Conference (MC2) debut. DMAF awards are similar to the Grammy Awards presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Winners are determined by local musicians and music industry professionals in southeast Michigan and offered in ten music genres; Folk/Acoustic, Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Country, Classical, Rock/Pop, R&B/Hip-Hop, Electronic, and World. The DMA is the only local music award in the nation to be presented by a not-for-profit organization. Voting is via the internet.

The fourth Friday after Easter is Great Prayer Day, Common Prayer Day, or in Dutch, "Store Bededag," a public holiday celebrated in Denmark. On Store Bededag, the Danes walk through Langelinie or Kastellet, listen to a choir, and eat specially-made buns on the holiday's eve. The day begins with the bells ringing, particularly around Christianshavn. There is no work during this day, and fasting is encouraged. This event is a public holiday in Denmark that began in 1686.
