Asteroid / Meteor Day, Intl. (1908): June 30

International Asteroid Day is observed each year on the anniversary of the Tunguska impact over Siberia, Russia, on June 30, 1908. The day seeks to raise public awareness about asteroid impact hazards. Events include lectures, films, expert science presentations, and educational workshops organized by museums, research institutes, government agencies, universities, astronomers, filmmakers, and concerned citizens. In February 2014, astrophysicist Dr. Brian May (and famed guitarist for the rock band QUEEN, which is why we include music as one of the categories) began working with Grigorij Richters, the director of a new film titled "51 Degrees North," a fictional story of an asteroid impact on London and the resulting human condition. May composed the music for the film and suggested that Richters preview it at Starmus, an event organized by Dr. Garik Israelian and attended by esteemed astrophysicists, scientists, and artists, including Stephen Hawking, Richard Dawkins, and Rick Wakeman. The result was the beginning of discussions that would lead to the launch of Asteroid Day in 2014. To ensure that the nascent idea of a movement had global support, May introduced Richters to the B612 Foundation, an American-based non-profit advocacy organization created to protect the world from dangerous asteroids through early detection. B612 co-founders Apollo 9 Astronaut Rusty Schweickart and three-time Astronaut Dr. Ed Lu, along with Danica Remy, Chief Operations Officer, brought to Asteroid Day a network of planetary defense specialists and global contacts. The four official co-founders of Asteroid Day are Dr. Brian May, Danica Remy, Grigorij Richters, and Rusty Schweickart.

The Austrian Grand Prix is a Formula One motor racing event held in Austria. It has been a part of the FIA Formula One World Championship calendar on and off since 1964. The race has been hosted at two different venues throughout its history: the Zeltweg Airfield and the Red Bull Ring (previously known as the Österreichring and A1-Ring). The first Austrian Grand Prix was held in 1964 at the Zeltweg Airfield circuit, but due to the track's poor conditions and safety concerns, the race was moved to the Österreichring in 1970. The Österreichring hosted the race until 1987, after which the event was discontinued due to safety issues and the need for circuit improvements. The Austrian Grand Prix returned to the Formula One calendar in 1997, after the circuit was renovated and renamed the A1-Ring. The race took place there until 2003 when it was once again removed from the calendar. In 2014, the event made its return after the circuit underwent further renovations and was renamed the Red Bull Ring. Since then, it has remained a fixture on the Formula One calendar. The Red Bull Ring is located in Spielberg, Styria, and is known for its picturesque surroundings, nestled in the Austrian countryside. The circuit is 4.318 km (2.683 mi) long and features a combination of long straights and fast, flowing corners, making it a thrilling and challenging track for drivers and teams. As with any other Formula One event, the Austrian Grand Prix provides an exciting weekend of racing, with practice sessions, qualifying, and the main race.

In an era of growing uncertainty, public engagement in parliamentary work is essential for meeting people's expectations and aspirations. It fosters public trust in governance and counteracts the rise of authoritarianism. The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) highlighted the importance of public engagement on the International Day of Parliamentarism, observed annually on June 30, marking the IPU's founding in 1889. Strong parliaments are key to democracy, serving as the people's voice, passing laws, allocating funds, and holding governments accountable. They also link international and national agendas, helping to implement international treaties and agreements. The IPU works with parliaments to strengthen their capacity to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In post-conflict countries, robust parliaments can facilitate a peaceful transition to democracy. The United Nations encourages the involvement of parliamentarians and parliamentary organizations in its work. The IPU, as the global organization of parliaments, promotes transparency, accountability, and participation at the global level, interacting with the UN on a wide range of issues. Parliaments were actively involved in the post-2015 development framework negotiations, advocating for goals related to democratic governance. To track parliamentary progress, the IPU and partners have introduced indicators based on Sustainable Development Goals Targets 16.6 and 16.7. This self-assessment tool allows parliaments to measure their democratic structure, operations, and activities against set criteria, fostering more resilient, effective, and independent institutions.

Before this, social media, as it is currently known, could not exist. There are currently 100s of social media websites worldwide, but the top as of this writing are Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Tiktok, Reddit, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Pinterest, and Instagram. National Tire Safety Week is a USTMA initiative to rally the tire industry in a focused effort to help drivers learn simple yet essential steps to maintain their tires. USTMA is the national trade association for tire manufacturers.

“Technology and sophisticated engineering are the heart and soul of tires,” said Anne Forristall Luke, USTMA president and CEO. “Tire manufacturers go to great lengths to produce tires for long-lasting, safe performance. And that commitment to quality extends beyond the factory. Tire manufacturers want to be a resource to consumers to help them understand the importance of regular maintenance to safety and how best to take care of their tires.”

Tire manufacturers, retailers, and others nationwide work to educate motorists about proper tire care and maintenance. Participating retail outlets join the nationwide effort to promote tire care through advertising, promotions, free tire pressure checks, and community and media outreach. This event can occur at the end of May or early June, with the actual date posted 45-60 days before.

Dhu al-Hijjah (M): June 7 - July 6

Dhu al-Hijjah is the 12th and last month in the Islamic Calendar, the final of four sacred months, and the month of Hajj. Performing Hajj occurs between the 8th - 12/13th of the month and is one of Islam's five pillars or fundamental acts that define the faith. Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca that devout Muslims endeavor to do at least once in their lifetime. When performed during the first 8-12/13 days of the Islamic month of Duh al-Hijjah, it is called Hajj, and when practiced at other times of the year, it is called Umrah. The following is a general description of Hajj al-Tamatt'u, the most common pilgrimage. Each year during Hajj, millions of people from around the world descend on the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca to perform the rituals of Hajj. One of the first places visited is the black box, the Kaaba. Muslims walk around counterclockwise seven times, three separate times during the pilgrimage. The word for this encircling is "tawaf." The Kaaba marks where Muslims believe Adam and Eve built the first house of worship, and Abram (hereafter referred to as Abraham (Ibrahim)) rebuilt it thousands of years later. In the Muslim faith, they refer to this as "the first house of the only true God." It is the Kaaba that Muslims face when they pray. Muslims believe it was here that God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael.* The Kaaba is believed to be the same size as Abraham's original temple. Performing Hajj is a 5-6 day process representing one of Islam's five pillars. FIVE PILLARS OF ISLAM Charity. Testimony of faith. Praying five times a day. Fasting during the month of Ramadan. Performing Hajj. All acts of devotion during the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah are highly rewarded and blessed. Fasting on the 9th day is known as al Nisai and Abu Dawud. Fasting on this day removes one's sins for the next two years. How is Hajj performed? Day 1) Commences on the 8th day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah. Step 1) Muslims change from everyday wear to ceremonial clothing called "ihram" upon arriving. Often in the airports around Saudi Arabia, you will see pilgrims flying in traditional clothing before arrival. Step 2: Dressed in their ihram, pilgrims perform "tawaf," circling the Kaaba seven times (3 times running, four times walking) counterclockwise. Step 3) After performing the first tawaf, pilgrims walk between the two hills of Safa and Marwa several times to the town of Mina, where they spend the night. The hills are where Hagar ran back and forth seven times, looking for water for Ishmael, and God took pity and created a spring for her. Pilgrims replicate the running back and forth through this ritual called "masa." The spring Muslims believe God created for Hagar is called Zamzam. Mina, where the day's journey ends, is the location of the three pillars (Jamrat al-Aqaba, Jamrat al-Wusta & Jamrat al-Sughra), representing the three times the devil tempted Abraham. Day 2: Performed on the 9th day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah. Step 1) This day is about walking from Mina to Arafat, approximately 6 miles; it is called the "waqf," or day of vigil. Pilgrims stand from noon until sunset in Arafat as part of Hajj, and Arafat is where the prophet Mohammed delivered his last sermon in 632 AD. Step 2) Leaving Arafat after nightfall, pilgrims walk to Muzdalifa, about 4 miles, and collect 49 stones along the way. They spend the night in Muzdalifa under the stars, and most pilgrims will fast on this day. Day 3: Eid al-Adha, the 10th day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah. Step 1) Pilgrims walk from Muzdalifa to Mina and throw stones at the devil, represented by the largest of the three pillars (Jamrat al-Aqaba). Day three is a day of celebration. Step 2) Pilgrims walk to Mecca from Mina to perform the second tawaf, walking seven times around the Kaaba. Step 3) They walk again between the hills of Safa and Marwa, returning to Mina. Step 4) Animals are sacrificed. The meat is cooked and distributed to commemorate Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son to God and God's acceptance of a sheep instead. A vast feast follows, with large portions going to the poor. Unlike sacrifices in other faiths, in Islam, the gift of an animal's life is not done to please God. It is performed to remember Abraham's obedience and for charity. One sheep or goat equals one person, and a camel or cow's sacrifice equals seven people. Only those who can afford to make a sacrifice will do so, often paying for those without funds. Days 4-6: the 11th - 13th days of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah On each day of this final period (2 or 3 days), pilgrims return to the three pillars representing the devil and stone them in a specific order. This uses up the remaining stones of the 49 collected on the second day. On the final day of Hajj, pilgrims change clothes, replacing the "iharm" with their standard attire to perform their third and final tawaf around the Kaaba. Upon completing Hajj, Muslims may now refer to themselves as 'alhaji' (male) or 'alhaja' (female). Like confirmation in Christianity or Bar/Bat Mitzvah in Judaism, this is a title of accomplishment in the Islamic faith. _________ *NOTE: The son referenced in this story is an area where Islam, Judaism, and Christianity differ in scripture. The Montreal International Jazz Festival was founded in 1980 by Alain Simard, André Ménard, and Denys McCann. Roskilde Festival (DK): June 29 - July 6

Denmark's eight-day Roskilde Festival began in 1971 when a couple of high school students, Mogens Sandfær and Jesper Switzer Møller, with promoter Carl Fischer, decided they needed a reason to party and hear great music. Over the years, the festival has grown exponentially in size and its cultural and societal impact.

With over 100,000 attendees annually, it's one of Europe's biggest festivals driven by non-profit ideals. All profits from the festival go to social and cultural charities.

What's it like?

Picture a city of tents sprawling as far as you can see, filled with people from all walks of life gathered in one place to celebrate music, art, and community. The music is diverse, featuring international stars and local Scandinavian talent, and nearly every genre is represented, including punk, electronic, jazz, hip-hop, rock, and folk performances.

The Art Zone is another feature highlighting the work of innovative and talented artists. The Science Pavilion presents exploration, talks, and workshops on sustainability and technology. It's a real fusion of different cultures and ideas.
