Geek Pride Day is an annual celebration of geek culture in the US observed since 2008 on the anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars film, May 25, 1977. In 1998 Tim Mc Eacher organized several unconnected events called Geek Pride Festival at a bar in Albany, New York. While it's a US national event, Geek Pride Day is acknowledged and celebrated in Canada and Europe and several other cities such as Halifax, Nova Scotia; Budapest, Hungary; Tel Aviv, Israel; Timişoara, Romania, and others.

George Floyd Day (2020): May 25

George Floyd (October 14, 1973 – May 25, 2020) was an American citizen of African descent who was active in his church, within the community, a hip-hop artist, a security guard, and a truck driver. His death at the hands of police resulted in the most extensive public protests in the US and globally for human rights since the 1960s. The results of these protests have changed attitudes and policies regarding race and racism, police policy, and how people view human rights, not just in the US but in multiple countries. George Floyd Day marks the anniversary of his death on May 25, 2020. How Floyd Died Roughly 1,000 people are shot and killed by police in the United States each year, and as a percent of the population, people of color are nearly twice as likely to be killed than white people. On Memorial Day 2020, George Floyd entered a convenience store and purchased a pack of cigarettes. The clerk believed the bill he used was counterfeit and thus left the store with another employee and walked out to Floyd's truck to demand the cigarettes be returned. He refused, and the employee then called the police on him. Officers arrived, and Floyd complied with their requests, though he did struggle momentarily. He was seated on a curb, and Floyd was told he was being arrested, handcuffed, and led across the street. At this point, anxious about closed spaces, Floyd fell to the ground and asked not to be seated in the car. Struggles ensued, and Officer Chauvin eventually began kneeling on Floyd's neck as he pleaded, stating he could not breathe and begging not to be killed. Chauvin did not relent, leaving his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes, killing Floyd. The lack of compassion shown by the police as Floyd begged to be able to breathe angered people worldwide, mainly since this wasn't the first time police had killed a black man as he begged for air. People had enough and took to the streets. The police officers involved were arrested and charged with murder and lesser crimes. Bystanders captured the events surrounding Floyd's death on camera, and the footage incensed people worldwide. Protests broke out in over 200 US cities and countries worldwide and continued for weeks. All three officers involved would eventually receive sentences of three or more years in jail. George Floyd will be remembered as a martyr, the spark that changed how police interact with people and a pivotal influence on how Americans view race.

Jordan's National Day, also known as Independence Day, is celebrated annually on May 25th. This public holiday commemorates Jordan's declaration of independence from British rule on May 25, 1946. The event marked the end of the British Mandate for Transjordan and the establishment of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, led by King Abdullah I. The British Mandate for Transjordan was established after World War I, following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. The mandate was meant to be a temporary arrangement, with the ultimate goal of preparing the territory for self-government. On March 22, 1946, the Treaty of London was signed, which officially recognized Jordan's independence, and on May 25, 1946, the British Mandate was terminated, and Jordan became a fully sovereign state. Jordan's National Day is marked by various activities and events throughout the country. Celebrations include flag-raising ceremonies, parades, cultural performances, and speeches by political leaders. The day is an opportunity for Jordanians to express their national pride and unity while honoring the history and achievements of their country since gaining independence.

In 2003, the world's oldest known wine was discovered. Its vintage? 6000 BC. The containers these first winemakers used were more like the box wine of today, each holding approximately five liters. This bottle emerged in Shulaveri, Georgia, in Eastern Europe. If you've ever enjoyed visiting Batumi or Tbilisi, as this writer has, Georgia is a wine lover's nirvana! Even the Czarist Russian architecture walls are covered in grape vines rather than ivy. Every cobblestone street in Batumi seems to have its wine shop and vintage. It is darling! Wine has been a part of human history since we began living in agricultural communities approximately 8-10,000 years ago. It became an art form during the Grecian times and perfected by the Romans and French. Turning water into wine was Jesus Christ's first miracle to please His mother at a wedding (ah). Wine is a daily part of many cultures but shunned in others for religious reasons. It is considered a civilized drink best shared with family and friends. National Wine Day is an unofficial event without an official sponsor. However, many wineries and restaurants nationwide have specials on this day.
