There was a time when having a penny in your pocket bought something. Today, pennies have very little to do with everyday commerce unless you’re trading on the stock market or live in a state with a sales tax. Still, cultural superstitions in the US and UK infuse the penny with luck, and having one in your pocket or finding one face up on the ground is believed to bring personal fortune and good luck. It is also the custom for a bride to put a penny in her shoe on her wedding day to ensure the couple always has money.

Obstetric Fistula, Day to End, Intl.: May 23

"Shame, isolation, and segregation are among the indignities faced by the hundreds of thousands of women and girls worldwide who suffer from obstetric fistula, an injury of the birth canal after prolonged and obstructed labor. The girls and women afflicted by the condition, which is preventable and largely treatable, are often plagued by chronic incontinence. As a result, they face devastating social stigma. The majority of women and girls who suffer from fistula are poor. Their inability to receive prompt medical treatment not only deprives them of their health and dignity but is a violation of their human rights. UNFPA leads the Campaign to End Fistula. Since 2003, UNFPA has supported over 100,000 fistula repair surgeries, and campaign partners have supported thousands more, enabling women and girls in more than 55 countries across Africa, Asia, the Arab region, and Latin America to regain hope and rebuild their lives. One survivor, Nasiwelo Bisolomo, lost her baby at the age of 18 after a prolonged obstructed labor at home. She suffered from fistula for the next 46 years. She nearly lost all hope when she heard of a UNFPA-supported fistula camp and traveled 300 km to undergo the life-transforming healing surgery. Now, she is helping spread the word that fistula treatment is available. It is time for the world to heed the call made by United Nations Member States in the 2018 United Nations Resolution on Ending Fistula in which they committed to eradicating the condition within a decade. Yet, achieving this goal requires increased investments, innovations, and partnerships. Failure to take action will undermine our chances of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, meeting the commitments of the International Conference on Population and Development, and ensuring no one is left behind. No woman or girl should be deprived of her dignity, hopes, and dreams. Red Nose Day: May 23 (est)

Red Nose Day is an annual fundraising event by Comic Relief, wherein people purchase red noses (like a clown) and wear them to increase awareness. Proceeds raised through the event provide support and resources to people living incredibly tough lives in the United Kingdom, the United States, and many of the world’s poorest communities. It strives to end world hunger. This event first ran in 2015. Since the pandemic, fundraising has continued throughout the year. Individual cities, towns, and nations hold Red Nose Days at their discretion throughout the year.

Turtle Day, World: May 23

The American Tortoise Rescue (ATR) champions World Turtle Day, a nonprofit organization established in 1990 for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle. ATR launched World Turtle Day to increase respect and knowledge for the world’s oldest creatures. These gentle animals have been around for 200 million years, yet they are rapidly disappearing due to smuggling, the exotic food industry, habitat destruction, global warming, and the cruel pet trade. ATR’s ultimate goal is to stop the illegal trade in turtles and tortoises worldwide. The priority in the United States is to ask pet stores and reptile shows to stop selling hatchling tortoises and turtles without informing pet buyers about their future pets. For example, many people buy sulcata tortoises as impulse buys because they are so adorable when tiny. The breeders and pet stores frequently do not tell the buyers that this tortoise can grow to 100 pounds or more and needs constant heat throughout the year since they do not hibernate. This event first ran in 2000.

Vesak (B): May 23

Vesak or Wesak is commonly referred to as Buddha Day and is acknowledged by the United Nations on the full moon in May (Vaisakha, a month of the Buddhist calendar that Hindus share). It is the day the Buddhist faith marks the dawning of the age of enlightenment known as Nirvāna. The exact date varies depending on the country and traditions; the most common date is this. Buddhists mark this day with meditation, observing the eight precepts, partaking in vegetarianism, giving to charity, and bathing Buddha statues. Traditionally, Buddhists set this day aside to bring happiness to the unfortunate, including the elderly, handicapped, and sick. They do so by distributing gifts or cash to various charitable homes nationwide. Vesak became an official Buddhist holiday in 1950; it parallels in importance the Christian celebration of Christmas and the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Fitr.

Aviation Maintenance Technicians Day (1868), Ntl.: May 24

National Aviation Maintenance Technician Day marks the anniversary of the birth of Charles Edward Taylor on May 24, 1868. Taylor is regarded as the father of aviation maintenance. He played an essential role in defining the vocation of aviation maintenance technicians in ensuring the safety and security of civil and military aircraft. In 1901, Charles Edward Taylor began working as a machinist for Orville and Wilbur Wright at the Wright Cycle Company in Dayton, Ohio. Using only a metal lathe, drill press, and hand tools, Taylor built, in six weeks, the 12-horsepower engine that powered the first flying machine of the Wright brothers on December 17, 1903. His entire career spanned 60 years. The Charles Edward Taylor Master Mechanic Award bears his name and recognizes individuals with 50+ years of aviation maintenance experience. It is among the highest honors available to men and women in the field.

Buddha Purnima (H): May 24

Buddha Purnima is an important day for Buddhists and Hindus. This holiday commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha and always falls on the full moon night in the month of Vaisakha of the Hindu calendar. In the Gregorian calendar, this occurs in April or May. Lord Buddha was the founder of the Buddhist religion and is said to be the ninth avatar of Vishnu. Buddha Jayanti's main celebrations occur in Bodh Gaya (Bihar, India). Bodh Gaya is the most sacred place for Buddhists. Temples are decorated, and prayers, sermons, and non-stop recitations of Buddhist scriptures resonate in monasteries, religious halls, and homes. Escargot Day, Ntl.: May 24

Escargot is French for "snail." Snails have been part of human diets for millenniums. In 54 BC, the army of Julius Caesar dined on snails throughout its conquest of what today we know as France, Luxembourg, Belgium, most of Switzerland, Northern Italy, and parts of The Netherlands and Germany. Snails became popular as a dessert during the Renaissance. Being shelled gastropods and a form of land mollusk, they are classified as "fish" in religious diets. As fish, eating them didn't violate the Christian mandate to eat fish on Fridays or Lent's no-meat restrictions. By the 1890s, Escargots à la Bourgignonne (snails with butter-parsley-garlic sauce) had gone from dessert to appetizer and were considered a posh addition to any meal. Happy Escargot Day!

Independence Day (ER)(1991/1994): May 24

Eritrea's National Day, also known as Independence Day, is celebrated annually on May 24th. This public holiday commemorates Eritrea's declaration of independence from Ethiopia on May 24, 1991, after a long and arduous struggle for self-determination that lasted for about 30 years. The Eritrean War of Independence began in 1961 when the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF) initiated an armed struggle against Ethiopian rule. Over time, the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) emerged as the leading force in the fight for independence. After many years of conflict, the EPLF finally defeated the Ethiopian forces in 1991, and Eritrea declared its independence. However, it wasn't until May 24, 1993, that Eritrea's independence was officially recognized through a UN-supervised referendum, where the majority of Eritreans voted for sovereignty. Eritrea's National Day is a significant event in the country, marked by various festivities and activities. Celebrations include parades, flag-raising ceremonies, cultural performances, and speeches by political leaders. The day is an opportunity for Eritreans to honor the sacrifices made during the struggle for independence and express their national pride and unity.
