Saint Anthony of Padua's Feast Day is a national holiday in Portugal. WHY SO MANY FEAST DAYS? Have you ever noticed that there seem to be feast days for just about everything in the Catholic and Orthodox Christian faiths? There is a reason for that. The church granted feast days to allow all subjects of the Crown to take a day off. As most worked six days a week, feast days provided a break that landowners and nobility couldn't deny. If they tried, they were going against the church, and that you did not do. In medieval times, there were approximately 60 feast days a year. Add this to 52 Sundays, Christmas, and Easter; workers received at least 114 days off a year. Contrast that to today. The average American gets 104 weekend days and seven national holidays off work. That's three days less than the commoners of the Dark Ages, just in case you're feeling a little overworked.

Blood Donor Day, World: June 14

World Blood Donor Day has been observed annually since 2004. Voluntary, unpaid blood donations must be increased rapidly in more than half the world’s countries to ensure a reliable supply of safe blood for patients whose lives depend on it. “Although we have many external differences, the same vital blood pumps through all our veins,” said Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General. “Voluntary, unpaid blood donation is the act of giving life – the greatest gift any person can give or receive.” About 108 million blood donations are collected globally every year. Nearly 50% of these blood donations are collected in high-income countries, home to less than 20% of the world’s population. The average blood donation rate is more than nine times greater in high-income and low-income countries. However, in many countries, demand exceeds supply, and blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available while ensuring its quality and safety. An adequate supply can only be assured through regular donations by voluntary, unpaid blood donors. Regular voluntary unpaid blood donors are the foundation of a safe blood supply because they are associated with low levels of infection that transfusions, including HIV and hepatitis viruses, can transmit. Around the world, 25 countries cannot screen all donated blood for one or more of these infections due to irregular supply of test kits, staff shortages, poor quality test kits, or lack of quality in laboratories. WHO encourages all countries to establish blood services based on voluntary non-remunerated blood donations. Today, only 62 countries get nearly 100 percent of their national blood supplies from voluntary unpaid blood donations, with 34 countries still dependent on family donors and even paid donors for more than 75 percent of their blood supply. Blood can be used whole or separated into its parts, such as red blood cells, platelets, plasma, and other “substances” that can be used to treat a wide range of diseases. A single unit of blood can benefit several patients. Transfusions of blood and blood products help save millions of lives every year, including during emergencies such as conflicts, natural disasters, and childbirth. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with a higher quality of life and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. “Voluntary blood donors come from all walks of life, but they have one thing in common: they put others before themselves — people they don’t even know,” said Dr. Ed Kelley, Director of the Department of Service Delivery and Safety at WHO. “Each time they donate blood, they commit an act of selfless heroism.” World Blood Donor Day’s objective is to improve the safety and adequacy of national blood supplies by promoting a substantial increase in the number of safe, voluntary, unpaid donors who give blood regularly.

Bourbon Day marks the anniversary of the day Rev. Elijah Craig began distilling corn in Kentucky to produce bourbon in 1789. Bourbon is a 100% American invention, and the day is best celebrated neat or on the rocks. HISTORY OF BOURBON Bourbon's roots trace to the late 18th and early 19th centuries in the United States. The name "bourbon" comes from Bourbon County, a region in Kentucky at the time. Although the exact origins are undocumented, several key moments and people contributed to the development of bourbon as we know it today. In the late 1700s, European settlers (primarily of Scots-Irish and English descent) moved into the western frontier of the United States, including Kentucky, bringing knowledge of distilling, which they adapted to the local ingredients—corn, rye, and barley. The limestone-filtered water in the region also played an essential role in bourbon production. Elijah Craig, a Baptist minister, and distiller, is partly attributed to its creation. On June 14, 1789, he is said to have been the first to age whiskey in charred oak barrels, which imparted the distinct caramel and vanilla flavors characteristic of bourbon. This practice became a standard for bourbon production. Bourbon County is not necessarily the birthplace of the spirit; however, it was a significant center for whiskey production and trade in the early 19th century. Whiskeys from this region found distribution on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in barrels marked "Bourbon," and the name stuck. During the 1820s-1850s, bourbon production flourished, with many distilleries opening in Kentucky. The whiskey gained popularity in the southern United States and became known as a distinctly American spirit. The American Civil War disrupted bourbon production, as many distilleries were destroyed or repurposed for the war effort. Following the war, the bourbon industry recovered and grew again. The Bottled-in-Bond Act (1897) established strict regulations for producing and labeling "bonded" whiskey, including bourbon. To be labeled bottled-in-bond, a bourbon had to be made by a single distiller in a single distillation season, aged for at least four years in a government-bonded warehouse, and bottled at 100 proof (50 percent alcohol by volume) to ensure the quality and consistency of bourbon. Prohibition (1920-1933), created with the passage of the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution and the Volstead Act, effectively shut down the legal production and sale of alcoholic beverages, including bourbon. Some distilleries were allowed to continue production for medicinal purposes, but overall, the bourbon industry suffered greatly. After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, the bourbon industry slowly recovered. During World War II, many distilleries were repurposed to produce industrial alcohol, bourbon production increased, and the spirit regained popularity in the post-war years. In the late 20th through the early 21st century, bourbon experienced a renaissance with the rise of craft distilleries and a renewed appreciation for the spirit's unique flavors and heritage. Bourbon has experienced increased global popularity, with enthusiasts enjoying its rich history and diverse flavors. Bourbon's history intertwines with the history of the United States and remains an iconic and beloved American spirit.

Flag Day (1777): June 14

Flag Day was created in 1886 by Bernard Cigrand, a school teacher in Wisconsin. He decided to hold a Flag Birthday Party on June 14, the Stars and Stripes US flag creation anniversary in 1777. Cigrand continued to advocate for this day by advertising it in magazines and newspapers. Soon, people from New York and some organizations in Pennsylvania started to follow suit. They began to display flags in various public buildings and homes. Schoolchildren were also given small flags and were encouraged to sing patriotic songs. On June 14, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that there should be a National Flag Day. It was in August of 1949 that this occasion became official through the signing of legislation by President Harry Truman, making June 14 National Flag Day.
