Arising from the ashes of the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, the first Tribeca Film Festival occurred in the spring of 2002 and is the brainchild of Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro, and Craig Hatkoff. The festival helped revitalize lower Manhattan after the attacks and provided a high-profile venue for independent filmmakers to showcase their work on various issues. By 2006 the festival received over 8,600 film submissions and held 1,500 screenings. In 2013 it drew more than three million people and generated more than US$ 600 million. Many films and activities can be seen online at the festival’s site.

Diabetes Week (UK): June 10-16

Diabetes Week in the United Kingdom aims to uncover the truth about diabetes, what it’s like to live with it, and what you wish everyone knew about living with it. Throughout the year, Diabetes UK cultivates diabetes truths from those living with the disease. People with diabetes are asked to share what they’d like people to know about diabetes and the diabetes myths they’d like to bust. First held in 2016 in the UK and 2017 in Australia, Infant Mental Health Awareness Week seeks to raise awareness among policymakers, professionals, and parents about the over-arching impact upon a child’s life resulting from their experience as a baby and toddler. Research confirms a direct link between infant parent-child bonding or attachment difficulties and psychiatric disorders in later life. This week includes parental and professional workshops, outreach, and tools throughout both nations.

National Little League Baseball Week began with President John F Kennedy in 1961 and is to occur on the beginning on the second Monday of June each year. The following is the presidential proclamation establishing this week. Proclamation 3407—National Little League Baseball Week April 18, 1961 By the President of the United States of America "Whereas active participation by youth in appropriate physical activities contributes to their fitness and to the maintenance of our national vigor and vitality; and Whereas Little Leagues in communities throughout the Nation have made it possible for thousands of young boys to take an active part in our national game of baseball; and Whereas Little League baseball not only promotes the physical well-being of the players, but also instills into them the qualities of fairness, cooperation, and discipline-qualities which contribute to the development of good citizenship; and Whereas the Congress, by House Concurrent Resolution 17, agreed to June 1, 1959, has requested the President to designate the week beginning the second Monday in June of each year as National Little League Baseball Week, in recognition of the national and community benefits resulting from Little League activity: Now, Therefore, I, John F. Kennedy, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate the week beginning the second Monday in June of 1961, and the week beginning the second Monday in June of each succeeding year, as National Little League Baseball Week. Created in 2017, Loneliness Awareness Week in the United Kingdom focuses on the importance of building awareness about loneliness's impact on the people around us. Anyone can be lonely, and everyone feels lonely at some point, and the pandemic has exasperated the situation for many. This week is about reaching out to friends and neighbors and raising awareness about loneliness and its impact on quality of life, health, and the community. At LEEP, this has to be our favorite event champion name, "Marmalade Trust." How cute is that? And it is so fun to say!

National Men’s Health Week falls on the third week of June, during National Men’s Health Month. Sponsored by Men’s Health Network, this promotion raises awareness of the health issues biological men face nationwide. It encourages organizations to create policies and services that serve the male population better. Men are encouraged to wear blue to support this awareness campaign. Blue ribbon lapel pins represent the fight against prostate cancer; the week also features national health fairs, fitness demonstrations, and healthy cooking tutorials.

Bloomsday Festival (IE)(1904): June 11-16

The Bloomsday Festival is a week-long celebration in Ireland leading up to Bloomsday, June 16th. The week is a literary exploration of the life and works of James Joyce, who wrote "Ulysses." The Bloomsday Festival and Bloomsday are named after the novel's lead character, Leopold Bloom. This event is co-sponsored by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Brandywine Realty. Windsurfing Regatta & Music Festival, Worthington (US-MN): June 7-9

The Worthington Windsurfing Regatta and Unvarnished Music Festival began in 1999. The festival consisted of a windsurfing competition during the day with a live (free) "unvarnished" music festival in the evening on Lake Okabena. The intent is to introduce a unique water sport focusing on our lake and to introduce the community to a candid style of music. The festival has been a big success, attracting windsurfers worldwide.

Arjan Dev (S) (1606) : June 16

Today is the anniversary of the Martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Sahib. Guru Arjan Dev Sahib (May 2, 1563-June 16, 1606) was the fifth Sikh Guru and a central figure in Sikh history. He was born in Goindval, Punjab, India, to Guru Ram Das Sahib, the fourth Sikh Guru, and Mata Bhani Ji. Guru Arjan Dev played a significant role in developing Sikhism and its institutions. Some notable contributions and events from Guru Arjan Dev Sahib's life include: Compilation of the Adi Granth: Guru Arjan Dev Sahib compiled the Adi Granth, the first edition of the Guru Granth Sahib, which is the central religious scripture of Sikhism. He collected the hymns of previous Gurus and those of several Hindu and Muslim saints and added his own compositions. The Adi Granth was completed in 1604 and installed in the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar. Construction of Harmandir Sahib: Guru Arjan Dev Sahib was instrumental in constructing the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar, Punjab. This holy site is the most revered pilgrimage destination for Sikhs and symbolizes openness and inclusivity in Sikhism. Expansion of Sikhism: Under Guru Arjan Dev Sahib's leadership, Sikhism expanded rapidly. He established a network of Sikh centers called Manjis, which helped organize and spread Sikh teachings. Martyrdom: Guru Arjan Dev Sahib's growing influence and the popularity of Sikhism led to tensions with the Mughal Empire. Emperor Jahangir, fearing the rise of Sikhism, ordered Guru Arjan Dev Sahib's arrest in 1606. The Guru was severely tortured and ultimately died in custody, becoming the first martyred Sikh Guru. His martyrdom is a turning point in Sikh history. It marked the beginning of the Sikhs' struggle against Mughal oppression and the eventual emergence of the warrior tradition within Sikhism. Guru Arjan Dev Sahib's life and teachings continue to inspire Sikhs worldwide, emphasizing humility, selfless service, and devotion to God.

Bloomsday (1904): June 16

Bloomsday commemorates the life and works of author James Joyce after Leopold Bloom from his 1922 novel "Ulysses." Joyce chose the date of Bloomsday in honor of the anniversary of his future wife's first date. On Bloomsday, it is common to reenact costumed scenes from the novel or conduct public readings from the book. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, holds an annual Bloomsday fair on this day, sponsored by The Rosenbach.

Family Remittances, Intl. Day of: June 16

The International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR), observed on 16 June, recognizes the contribution of over 200 million migrants to improve the lives of their 800 million family members in their home countries. This globally recognized day brings attention to the significant impact that these financial contributions have on households, communities, countries, and regions. It encourages governments, private sector entities, and civil society to maximize the impact of remittances. The theme for the 2023-24 IDFR campaign highlights the role of digital technologies in enhancing financial inclusion in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). It also focuses on reducing the cost of remittances to the target of 3% as outlined in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 10.c. The United Nations calls for promoting digital and financial solutions for remittances to foster greater social and economic resilience and inclusion. In 2022, international remittances to LMICs totaled US$626 billion. These funds, typically transferred monthly in amounts between US$200-US$300, support basic household needs and have transformative effects on both households and local communities, enabling many families to achieve their ‘own’ SDGs. However, the cost of transferring funds remains high —averaging 6% for a US$200 transfer in the second quarter of 2022. The adoption of digital technologies in remittance services offers potential for reducing these costs and increasing efficiency, with mobile providers offering the best rates at 3.5%, though less than 1% of transactions are currently made through digital channels.

Father's Day, Intl. (1910): June 16

"Every day, fathers across our the world give everything they have to build a better future for their family, asking nothing in return but their children's love. Parenthood is the ultimate gift and an incredible responsibility," stated President Barak Obama in his 2011 Father's Day proclamation. Father's Day honors men's vital roles in their children's lives. Unlike Mother's Day, which occurs on different days throughout the world, Father's Day tends to be universal and observed on this day in a majority of countries. The first Father's Day was held on June 19, 1910, at the Spokane, Washington, YMCA. Sonora Smart Dodd hosted it to honor her father, a single father who raised her and her five siblings.

Fudge Day: June 16

Fudge Day is the holiday for fudge lovers (so basically all of us, or nearly all of us). The earliest written account of fudge is noted in 1886 and found in a letter written by Emelyn Hartridge. A student of Vassar College, she wrote about the fudge her cousin made and sold for 40 cents a pound. She obtained a copy of the recipe and produced 30 pounds for the senior auction at the college.

When the evening of Ganga Dussehra descends, devotees begin offering leaf boats with candles, sweets, and flowers to the river. The pilgrims seem mesmerized by the shlokas, bhajans, kirtans, and bells. It is an enchanting spectacle for people seeing this ritual for the first time.
