Pony Express Live: June 17-27

The Pony Express Re-ride is a 10-day recreation of the 1,966-mile route of the 19th-century Pony Express, the old-school form of Federal Express. Riders carry mail from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, California, the same way they did in April 1860 and October 1861.

This 24-hour-a-day ten-day event is a fantastic treat for anyone along the path of the re-enactment of the historic ride.

Hours are estimated and depend on the horses. However, if you are in Missouri, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Nevada or California, you can see the Pony Express live as it passes through cities in these states.

Email has become the preferred method of communication for business. As of 2010, texting and social media applications have quickly surpassed email as the favorite form of non-professional interaction.

The sheer volume of emails we receive is a matter of concern for many people. Spam, unsolicited, and, at times, malicious emails clog mailboxes, leading to wasted time and fraud in the case of malfeasants. National Email Week's primary purpose is to raise awareness of emails' do's and don'ts while providing tips that allow people to manage their email correspondences.

Flag Week, Ntl.: June 9-15

National Flag Week always centers on June 14, National Flag Day. This week, Americans display the American flag in their homes and public buildings. Other activities to commemorate this occasion include flag-raising ceremonies, essay competitions, and street parades. The National Flag Foundation is actively seeking activities that can nurture the love of the American flag and the traditions that come along with it to keep this occasion alive. This occasion started in 1886 when Bernard Cigrand, a school teacher in Wisconsin, decided to hold a Flag Birthday on June 14, coinciding with the 108th anniversary of the Stars and Stripes US flag. Cigrand continued to advocate for this day by advertising it in magazines and newspapers. Soon enough, people from New York and some organizations in Pennsylvania started to follow suit. They began to display flags in various public buildings and homes. Schoolchildren were also given small flags and were encouraged to sing patriotic songs. On June 14, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that there should be a National Flag Day. It was in August of 1949 that this occasion became official by signing the legislation by President Harry Truman, making June 14 Flag Day.

Beer Day, Britain (UK) (1215): June 15

Created by Jane Peyton (award-winning beer sommelier, drinks educator, author, and events producer), Beer Day Britain is supported by the beer industry in the United Kingdom, including Britain’s Beer Alliance, Society of Independent Brewers, British Beer & Pub Association, and the Campaign for Real Ale. Pubs, brewers, and retailers throughout the United Kingdom celebrate by hosting special events in their pubs, breweries, and shops. The date chosen commemorates the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215AD on June 15. This document includes on line 35: Let there be throughout our kingdom a single measure for wine and a single measure for ale and a single measure for corn, namely the London quarter. This event first ran in 2015.

Bug Busting Day, Ntl. (UK): June 15

National Bug Busting Day occurs three times yearly in the United Kingdom: January, June, and October. It is a concentrated effort to stem the tide of lice infections within schools and the general population. Through the registered charity Community Hygiene Concern, the government teaches parents, educators, and pharmacists how to detect and stop the spread of head lice and provides affordable Bug Busting kits. The late Dr. RJ Donaldson started Community Bug Busting Days, affectionately known as Paddy. Dr. Donaldson demonstrated in the 1970s that an intensive detection/treatment campaign could dramatically cut the prevalence of head lice. He was the tireless mentor of the Bug Busting Days organized by Community Hygiene Concern, taking a personal interest from 1986 in our development of wet detection methods in preference to less effective dry or damp methods. Today Bug Busting Days are organized in partnership with the Department of Health. Lice are a big problem in schools. Once they infect an individual, these parasites can be very difficult to get rid of. The following are some facts: The eggs of head lice usually take seven to ten days to hatch. Combing dry or damp hair with a fine-tooth comb is not a reliable way to detect lice. Metal combs are unsuitable for louse detection because these combs are primarily nit combs. Lice caught between the tightly spaced teeth remains unnoticed against the metal and can be combed back into the hair unharmed at subsequent strokes. No studies prove that wet head lice grasp hairs more tightly, thus hampering their removal with a fine-tooth comb. There is no scientific proof that prolonged head-to-head is required to catch lice—close contact is enough. Head lice are a community problem. Approximately 20 percent of head lice cases occur in people over 16 or under four years old.

Juggler's Day, World (1947): June 15*

World Juggler’s Day occurs on the Saturday closest to June 17 each year. June 17, 1947, is the day the International Juggler’s Association (IJA) came into being. IJA is an organization consisting of jugglers who wish to have regular meetings and promote camaraderie and friendship. World Juggler’s Day honors juggling and the people who push boundaries to keep this skill alive. Today, people learn how to juggle or watch a professional juggler do his thing. World Juggler’s Day is one of two Juggling Days in the LEEP calendar. The day set aside for master multitaskers occurs in mid-April each year.

Magna Carta Day (1215): June 15

June 15 marks the anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta in 1215 AD, and it is the cornerstone of modern legal contracts. The Magna Carta Libertatum is a charter agreed to by King John of England at Runnymede, near Windsor, and forms the basis for Western civilization and property law and rights. First drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury to make peace between the unpopular King and a group of rebel barons, it promised the protection of church rights, protection for the barons from illegal imprisonment, access to swift justice, and limitations on feudal payments to the Crown, to be implemented through a council of 25 barons. Neither side stood behind their commitments, and a war broke out. But two years later, when the war ended, a peace treaty was agreed upon, and the document was reintroduced and got the name Magna Carta. The charter became part of English political life and was renewed by each monarch.

The Great Willy Waddle (UK): September 19

How do you get men to take male cancers seriously? You throw The Great Willy Waddle fundraiser! The primary two-kilometer run or walk in Edinburgh, with a brotherly event in London, is a favorite with groups and cancer survivors. Participants wear inflatable male membrane costumes (which participants get to keep). Then all the decked-out inflated willies waddle, jog, or walk the two-kilometer route through Holyrood Park in Edinburgh, Scotland (June), or Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London (May). Willies waddle for sponsorship dollars, with all funds going to support Orchid for research into male cancers and helping those with it. Open to participants aged 16 years or over.
