Anne and Samantha Day occurs on the summer and winter solstice to honor the work of two teenage women who died too young. Its purpose is to create a postage stamp to commemorate their actions promoting world peace and understanding. It also encourages girls and young women to make their voices heard and take action. Anne is for Anne Frank, the author of The Diary of Anne Frank. Anne died in a Nazi concentration camp less than two months before WWII ended in Europe. She was just sixteen years old. Her diary is one of the most widely read books in the world. Samantha is for Samantha Smith, who is known as the world's youngest ambassador. Passionate about peace, she wrote a letter to the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Yuri Andropov, in November 1982, congratulating him on his new job and with a desire to promote peace during the Cold War. After a couple of letters, Smith received an answer from the Soviet leader with an invitation to visit. She wrote the book describing the trip, Journey to the Soviet Union. Samantha died on August 25, 1985, in a domestic plane crash in Maine at age 13.

Nursing assistants are key players in the lives of the people in their care, and each nursing assistant creates an environment of caring for the resident or client and the worker. The nationwide observance of Nursing Assistant's Week provides many opportunities to recognize and validate the nursing assistant's role in the health care system. Public recognition of nursing assistants provides a valuable service, not only for making nursing assistants more visible but also to lessen the concern of family members when a loved one requires special care. The annual observance of Nurse Assistants' Week and Career Nurse Assistants' Day is a particular time to celebrate and recognize the efforts of the Nurse Assistant in long-term care services.

Forget-Me-Not Days and The Longest Day, the Alzheimer's Association's annual fundraiser on the summer solstice in 2019. Forget-Me-Not Days began with Bankers Life and Casualty Company, the national life and health insurer, in 2003 as the company's annual fundraiser to benefit the Alzheimer's Association. Bankers, agents, employees, and association volunteers nationwide hit the streets wearing distinctive green aprons and handing out packets of Forget-Me-Not seeds to raise awareness of the disease. One hundred percent of the donations collected benefit the Alzheimer's Association. Since 2003, Bankers has helped raise over US$5 million for the Alzheimer's Association through this fundraiser.

Yoga Day, Intl.: June 20

One hundred and seventy-five nations, including the United States, Canada, and China, co-sponsored the UN resolution to create an international yoga day each year on the summer solstice, June 21. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi championed the resolution, and the United Nations General Assembly finally adopted this day on December 11, 2014. International Yoga Day began on June 21, 2015. There is some controversy surrounding this day. Initially, yoga was a spiritual component of the Hindu faith. The first yogi, Adiyogi, is said to have turned south at the solstice and first set his eyes on the Saptarishis (his seven disciples), whose job was to spread the science of yoga to the world. For centuries Christians and others avoided yoga because of this. During the 20th century, yoga became popularized and lost its religious connotation in much of the West. Yoga purists think this day should not be celebrated outside of India because it marks the commercialization of yoga rather than its spiritual roots. Whether you celebrate the spiritual origins or the fact that you can create a fantastic body with yoga, either is acceptable. Mostly International Yoga Day is about celebrating a form of mental and physical rejuvenation that nearly everyone can participate. Images below show some of the key people in the creation of yoga. Maharishi Patanjali The father of yoga, Maharishi Patanjali, compiled the 195 yoga sutras and bhasya (commentary), the foundation of yoga philosophy. Patanjali's philosophy illustrates eight paths that marry yoga with other forms of Healthy Living. Adi Shankaracharya Born in 788 AD in Kaladi, Kerala Adi Shankaracharya was a philosopher of the Vedas and advocate of Advaita Vedanta. He founded the Dashanami monastic Hindu ordering the Shanmata tradition. Swami Vivekananda Born in Calcutta in 1863, Swami Vivekananda studied under Ramakrishna and introduced Advaita Vedanta and yoga to Europe, and America went to Swami Vivekananda at the Parliament of World's Religions, Chicago, 1893.
