Alan Turing was born on June 23, 1912, to Julius Mathison Turing and Ethel Sara in Paddington, England. During the Second World War, he worked for the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS), the center for breaking codes in the UK. He cracked the encryption codes required for the German Enigma machine, allowing the Allies to gain momentum in their war campaigns. After the war, he designed ACE ( Automatic Computing Engine), one of the first computers.

Flamingo Day, Pink (1957): June 23

Pink Flamingo Day honors the 1957 pink flamingo lawn décor creator Don Featherstone. It occurs on the day after his death in 2015. This event was declared a holiday by the former mayor of Leominster, Massachusetts, Dean Mazzaralla. Its champion is the Lawn Greeting Association. Lawn greetings, also known as a ‘yard card,’ are a prank played on loved ones and friends. A popular version of a yard card is installing a flock of plastic pink flamingos overnight. The prankster hires a company that arrives after dark and fills the recipient’s lawn with various critters, including flamingos, dinosaurs, cows, and more. The pranked wakes up in the morning to a laugh. People do this instead of sending flowers or cards for special events. History of the Plastic Pink Flamingo: Don Featherstone hails from a small town in Massachusetts called Leominster. Hired by a plastic molding company called Union Products, Don created clay molds of animals for plastic lawn ornaments. These critters included cows, roosters, pigs, and more. After studying a National Geographic magazine, Featherstone created what would become an American icon: the plastic pink flamingo. For almost 50 years, Union Products manufactured these pink birds. Several other companies tried to reproduce their versions of pink flamingos in different shapes and shades of pink. Sadly, due to increasing production costs, Union Products ceased all production and closed its doors for good. Many flamingo fans feared the pink flamingo lawn ornament would become extinct. Orthodox Christians follow the Julian Calendar rather than the Gregorian Calendar and celebrate most holidays a week later. Orthodox Pentecost is a Christian observance celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit into the disciples of Jesus Christ following His ascension to heaven (Easter). It is always held on the seventh Sunday after Easter and coincides with the Jewish festival of Shavuoth. Pentecost marks the beginning of the Christian faith as an official movement in 33 AD. In the Commonwealth countries, Pentecost is also called Whitsun or Whit. Its significance to Christians can be paralleled with the Holy Month of Ramadan in the Islamic faith and the receipt of the Decalogue in Judaism. In all instances, the disciples (Christian) and prophets (Islam and Judaism) received instruction and word from God/Holy Spirit, defining the basis of the faith.

On National Pink Day, people wear the color pink, enjoy eating pink food, and donate to charities. The color pink first came to prominence in the 17th century and is described as a pale red color' The word pink derives from the Dianthus Flower with its 'pinked' petals. Pink was once an ordinary verb meaning "to decorate with a perforated pattern (pinking shears)." Specific color combinations that use pink symbolize moods. Combined with white or blue, pink denotes memories from childhood, femininity, and sensitivity. In recent years it has come to symbolize the transgender movement. When combined with black or purple, it represents seduction. Throughout the centuries, you'll find pink in fashion and religious artwork. However, until WWII, pink was considered masculine, and blue was feminine. Mamie Eisenhower, the first lady of the US during the 1950s, changed this. She loved the color, wore it, painted rooms, and surrounded herself with it. When movie star Jane Mansfield took up the pink torch, pink became the "in color" associated with women.

Recognized by the United Nations in 2010, International Widow's Day often includes awareness campaigns against ostracism, discrimination, and violence against widows and their children. The Loomba Foundation was the first organization to establish International Widow's Day in 2005. This day is significant to the organization's founder because June 23, 1954, was when Shrimati Pushpa Wati Loomba, the mother of Raj Loomba, became a widow. Widows suffer discrimination in many cultures, yet their plight is rarely recognized. The foundation wants to shed light on this situation. On June 22, 2010, the organization submitted a proposal to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. He ratified it, and June 23 became International Widow's Day by UN Resolution 65/189.
