Work Wise Week and National Work from Home Day in the United Kingdom promote elevated working practices. Practices include hybrid, flexible, remote, mobile, and working from home. The event's objective is to establish the UK as the premier progressive global economy and improve the nation's ranking in the Developed Nations Productivity League. This event began in 2006. This event is one of three known National Work From Home Weeks in the LEEP Calendar. The second is in October and takes place in the United States. The third is also in the United Kingdom in January.

Alcohol & Other Drug-Related Birth Defects Week, Ntl.: May 12-18

Each May, NCADD and the National Network of Affiliates play a significant and vital role across the US in educating people, especially women, about the dangers of consuming alcohol and using drugs during pregnancy. An educated mother or father can prevent the fate many newborns face. This month is about educating people about the facts. Fetal alcohol syndrome disorder (FASD), the leading cause of developmental disabilities in newborns (historically known as mental retardation), stems from maternal alcoholism or heavy drinking during pregnancy. ALCOHOL Features of FASD include growth deficiency before and after birth, developmental delays, intellectual challenges, behavioral problems, and changes in facial characteristics such as a flattened mid-face, small jaw, or a thin upper lip. COCAINE Perinatal cocaine exposure can result in obstetrical complications such as low birth weight, smaller head circumference, abnormal neonatal behavior, and cerebral infarction at birth. Children with this exposure are easily distracted and passive. They face various visual and perceptual problems and difficulties with fine motor skills. Alcohol and Drug use During pregnancy: In the US: 20 percent (about one million) of pregnant women smoke cigarettes; 18 percent (about 750,000) of women drink alcohol during pregnancy; Six percent (225,000) of women use an illicit drug at least once while carrying a child to term.

Eosinophil Awareness Week, Ntl.: May 19-25

Created by the US Congress in 2007, National Eosinophil Awareness Week (NEAW) addresses eosinophil-associated diseases. Eosinophils (pronounced “ee-oh-sin-oh-fills”) are a type of white blood cell that helps our immune systems fight off infections and parasites. They also play a role in allergic reactions and inflammatory processes. When a person has elevated numbers of eosinophils in their digestive system, tissues, organs, and bloodstream, without a known cause, they may have an eosinophil-associated disease. These conditions are characterized by the areas of the body in which the eosinophils have accumulated. A few examples include the esophagus (eosinophilic esophagitis), stomach (eosinophilic gastritis), or bladder (eosinophilic cystitis). Symptoms of eosinophil disease may vary depending on the area of the body affected and by age. Patients often embark on a long, frustrating journey of seeing many different specialists before a diagnosis is made. Although not commonly life-threatening, these chronic diseases require lifelong treatment and can cause debilitating symptoms. Most subsets of eosinophil-associated disease do not yet have an FDA-approved pharmaceutical indicated for treatment.

In developed nations, women are waiting longer to have children, which has advantages. Older mothers have more life experience and are generally wealthier and more mature. Of course, it has its drawbacks. After thirty-five, it can be difficult to conceive, energy is not as plentiful, and it is much harder to lose the baby weight. Salute to 35+ Moms Week is about supporting moms with more life experience than baby experience and helping them be the best moms they can be.

National Police Week is a nationally recognized event in the US supported by presidential decree since 1962. "As a nation, we rely on law enforcement officers to keep our neighborhoods safe, enforce our laws, and respond in times of crisis. These men and women sustain peace and order across America, and we look to them as models of courage and integrity. This week, we honor their extraordinary service and sacrifice and remember the fallen heroes whose selfless acts have left behind safer streets and stronger communities. Every day, peace officers face the threat of violence and danger. They routinely put their lives on the line to defend ours, and the price of that bravery may result in injury, disability, or death. The steadfast dedication of our country's law enforcement officers warrants more than praise. That is why my Administration has provided billions of dollars in grants to support State, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies. These funds give peace officers the tools and resources they need to help ensure our safety. Thanks to law enforcement officers, our nation is more secure. They work with vigilance and dedication to identify and arrest those who seek to do us harm. They have also been instrumental in foiling many potential attacks, including the recent plot in New York City's Times Square. From combating terror and staking out criminals to patrolling our highways, peace officers, with the strong support of their families, maintain stability in our communities as we go about our daily lives. This week, we recognize their invaluable contributions to upholding justice, enforcing the rule of law, and protecting the innocent. By a joint resolution approved October 1, 1962, as amended (76 Stat. 676), and by Public Law 103-322, as amended (36 USC 136-137), the President has been authorized and requested to designate May 15 of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week in which it falls as Police Week."

Transportation Week, Ntl.: May 12-18

National Transportation Week recognizes our nation's transportation infrastructure and the men and women who build, maintain, and utilize it. In 1957. by joint resolution, Congress requested the President designate the third Friday in May of each year as 'National Defense Transportation Day,' and, by joint resolution, approved May 14, 1962, as amended (36 United States. C. 133), that the week during which that Friday falls be designated as 'National Transportation Week.' Roads, bridges, and ports are the transportation networks essential to making the United States the best place in the world to do business. Repairing our transportation networks is about economic growth and security. Good roads ensure first responders can respond effectively during a crisis. That means protecting our critical infrastructure and repairing roads and bridges that put our people at risk. Together, we can make meaningful progress toward those goals. Let us recommit this week to revitalizing transportation, pioneering new solutions to tough challenges, and making lasting investments in America's infrastructure.

Dirty Dishes Day, (No): May 18

No Dirty Dishes Day probably arose out of frustration in some office cafeteria. Have you ever noticed that people tend to put dishes in the sink until they pile up when you don't live there? In the office lunchroom, this happens even faster. Dirty dishes in the sink can be an annoying and unhealthful problem if left unattended. Dirty dishes, counters, and floors attract disease-carrying scavengers, including roaches, ants, flies, mice, and rats. Unattended dirty dishes can grow bacteria and mold, leading to allergies and sickness. But even simply washing dishes is only sometimes enough. Most home dishwashers cannot sanitize dishes, which means even though they may be clean to the eye, they still have germs and bacteria. To disinfect dishes, they must be rinsed with a disinfectant (like bleach or industrial chemical) or rinsed (or exposed to heat) for at least 10 seconds in water above 82 degrees Celsius or 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Whether it is in your office break room or at home, pledge today to leave no dirty dishes in the sink or elsewhere. After all, it is the best way to celebrate the day.
