Road Safety Week, Canadian (CA): May 14-20 (est)

06:20 AM | -
Midway through Aggressive Driving Month, the Canadian Safety Council chooses one week to intensify its focus on younger drivers and fostering safe driving habits. According to Transport Canada, young driver, and passenger fatalities continue to be very noticeable in motor vehicle collision statistics. Nearly 23 percent of motor vehicle fatalities were 15 to 24 years old's in 2010, even though this age group makes up only 13 percent of the Canadian population. Put another way, over 500 young people are killed each year in road crashes in Canada, and a further 40,000 are injured, many seriously. Bee Day, World: May 20

06:20 AM | -
World Bee Day raises awareness about the importance of bees and other pollinators for our ecosystem and food supply and was first celebrated in 2018. Bees and other pollinators play a crucial role in our environment, as they help pollinate crops and plants, which in turn helps maintain biodiversity and support food production. Many of the foods we rely on without bees and other pollinators cease to exist. The observance of World Bee Day aims to highlight the critical role bees and other pollinators play in our environment and promote the conservation and sustainable use of these essential creatures. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the threats facing bees and other pollinators, such as habitat loss, climate change, and pesticide use. To celebrate World Bee Day, many organizations and individuals worldwide organize events, such as educational programs, beekeeping workshops, and plantings of bee-friendly habitats. The observance of World Bee Day allows people to come together to appreciate and protect these vital creatures.

Eliza Doolittle Day: May 20

06:20 AM | -
Who doesn't love My Fair Lady? It is the story of street urchin Eliza Doolittle who, through coaching, learns the mannerisms and speech patterns of the upper class to fool them and get the man of her dreams. George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion forms the basis of this timeless classic, which is replicated in dozens of modern storylines. How you speak and how well you speak continue to designate your level of education and often status in society. Like it or not, you are judged by how well you speak, read and write. Eliza Doolittle Day reminds us of the importance of elocution, grammar, and syntax in effective communication. There will always be differences by region. For example, consider how Americans and the British pronounce the metal aluminum. In America, we say Ah-lu-mah-nim. In England, you'll hear Al-loo-min-ee-um. However, well-spoken is recognized and understood everywhere a language is spoken. Happy Eliza Doolittle Day!

Independence Day (TL)(2002): May 20

06:20 AM | -
Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, celebrates its National Day on November 28th, also known as Proclamation of Independence Day or Restoration of Independence Day. This public holiday commemorates the declaration of independence from Portugal on November 28, 1975. The process of decolonization in Timor-Leste began in 1974 when Portugal initiated a series of political reforms and started to withdraw from its overseas colonies. On November 28, 1975, the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) unilaterally declared the country's independence. However, just nine days later, on December 7, 1975, Indonesia invaded Timor-Leste and annexed it as its 27th province, leading to a long and bloody struggle for independence. Timor-Leste's struggle for independence continued for 24 years, with various resistance movements fighting against Indonesian occupation. Finally, in 1999, a United Nations-sponsored referendum was held, in which the majority of the population voted for independence. Following a period of United Nations administration, Timor-Leste officially became an independent nation on May 20, 2002. National Day is a significant event in Timor-Leste, marked by various festivities and activities throughout the country. Celebrations include flag-raising ceremonies, parades, cultural performances, and speeches by political leaders. The day serves as an opportunity for the people of Timor-Leste to express their national pride and unity, as well as to honor the sacrifices made during the struggle for independence.

Rescue Dog Day, Ntl: May 20

06:20 AM | -
National Rescue Dog Day is about finding forever homes for the more than 3.3 million dogs in shelters yearly. Event champion Tails That Teach, Inc. makes the following suggestions on how best to observe this day: ADOPT: If there is room in your life for a dog, consider adoption and giving one a forever home. FOSTER: Many dogs abandoned in shelters benefit from socialization or would thrive better away from the shelter environment. Others may require medical care or rehabilitation in a home setting before an adoption can take place. DONATE: Shelters always need donations. In addition to financial contributions, shelters have a list of much-needed items such as blankets, toys, treats, and leashes. VOLUNTEER: Help out at your local shelter. Taking dogs for walks, grooming them, and giving them affection improves their socialization. Spay/neuter: Be responsible for your pets. Overpopulation is the number one reason shelters exist. Supply Chain Professionals Day: May 20

06:20 AM | -
The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) announced the creation of the inaugural Annual Supply Chain Professionals Day in 2018, honoring the professionals responsible for the buy, make, move, and sell activities that comprise the modern supply chain. While National Truck Driver Appreciation Week and National Healthcare Supply Chain Week exist, there has yet to be an official day to celebrate most professionals representing the end-to-end supply chain daily. "Our organization represents thousands of supply chain professionals across the world. The creation of the Annual Supply Chain Professionals Day allows us to recognize this growing and evolving discipline and the professionals who serve within it," said Rick Blasgen, CSCMP President and Chief Executive Officer. The idea for a professional organization of distribution managers (later referred to as logistics managers) was first conceived in May of 1962 to meet an urgent need for continuing education and to provide an opportunity for an interchange of ideas in this rapidly growing profession that has come to be known today as supply chain management. Fifty-six years later, CSCMP continues to serve today's supply chain professionals. Built by members, for members, CSCMP connects, develops, and educates the world's logistics and supply chain management professionals throughout their careers. No matter where you are in your career development, CSCMP has the resources to help you achieve your goals. "It's exciting to see that we finally have an occasion to celebrate supply chain professionals' contributions to our global economy. All too often, our profession can remain behind-thescenes and it doesn't always get the proper recognition for the important role we play in the success of our organizations. Supply Chain Professionals Day should create an excellent opportunity each year to show appreciation for those who have careers in the various aspects of the end-to-end supplychain," said Mark Bray of ACR Supply Company and President of the CSCMP Raleigh Roundtable.

Unity Day (CM)(1972): May 20

06:20 AM | -
Cameroon's National Day is celebrated annually on May 20th. This public holiday is also known as Unity Day, commemorating the unification of the English-speaking and French-speaking regions of the country. The day marks a significant milestone in Cameroon's history, as it highlights the coming together of these two distinct cultural groups under one national identity. The historical background of this day dates back to 1961 when British-administered Southern Cameroons joined the French-speaking Republic of Cameroon through a plebiscite. This union resulted in the formation of the Federal Republic of Cameroon on October 1, 1961. Later, on May 20, 1972, a referendum was held, which led to the adoption of a new constitution and the creation of a unitary state called the United Republic of Cameroon. This day was then chosen as the National Day. Cameroon's National Day is marked by various activities and events throughout the country. Celebrations include military and civilian parades, cultural performances, and speeches by political leaders. The day serves as an opportunity for Cameroonians to express their national pride and unity while honoring their diverse cultural heritage.

Victoria Day (CA)(1837): May 20

06:20 AM | -
The sovereign's birthday is a Canadian since the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). May 24, Queen Victoria's birthday, was declared a holiday by the Legislature of the Province of Canada in 1845. After confederation, the Queen's birthday was celebrated every year on May 24 unless that date was a Sunday, in which case a government proclamation was issued for the celebration on May 25. After the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, an Act was passed by the Parliament of Canada, establishing a legal holiday on May 24 in each year (or May 25 if May 24 fell on a Sunday) under the name Victoria Day. Today, it is marked on the Monday before her birthday to create a three-day weekend.
