Foul Ball Week, Ntl.(1921): May 16-21

On May 16, 1921, Reuben Berman caught a foul ball during a Reds and Giants baseball game. At the time, the custom was to return the ball to the teams. Berman didn't want to, so when security came to get it. He tossed it into the crowd as they escorted him out of the ballpark. He then turned around and sued the Giants, whose stadium it was, for pain and suffering, because he couldn't keep the ball. He was awarded US$100 by the courts, far more than the cost of a baseball, teaching the team owners a lesson. Eventually, every club would allow fans to keep any balls that landed in the stands. To mark that sportsman's victory, we celebrate National Foul Ball Week. This event first ran in 2017.

Narasimha Jayanti is a celebration of the triumph of good over evil. In the Hindu faith, Narasimha Jayanti marks the fourth reincarnation of Lord Vishnu into half man and half lion. By becoming half man and half lion, Lord Vishnu could end the tyranny of Hiranyakashipu and redirect all people on the path to Dharma. Devotes of Lord Vishnu often observed this day with fasts, prayers, pumas, and offerings of gram sprouts to the god. As a significant cash crop, tea contributes to rural development, poverty reduction, and food security. It also carries health benefits due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and weight loss properties, in addition to holding cultural significance across various societies. International Tea Day, celebrated on 21 May, was established to promote sustainable tea production and consumption, and to highlight its role in combating hunger and poverty. The tea industry's contribution aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals, including reducing poverty (Goal 1), combating hunger (Goal 2), empowering women (Goal 5), and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems (Goal 15). Enhancing public awareness of tea's importance for rural development and sustainable livelihoods is crucial to contributing to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. However, tea production faces significant challenges due to climate change, as it requires specific agro-ecological conditions. Changes in temperature and rainfall patterns affect tea yields, product quality, and prices, consequently impacting incomes and threatening rural livelihoods. Hence, there's an urgent need for tea-producing countries to integrate climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies into their national tea development plans.

143 Day, Mr. Rogers Day: May 22

The beloved children's television host, Mr. Rogers (Fred Rogers), referred to the numbers 1-4-3 as standing for the letters in the phrase 'I love you.' It is also the weight he maintained throughout his life as an adult. In 2019 the Governor of Pennsylvania declared the 143rd day of the year, each year subsequently, as Mr. Rogers Day of Kindness, and people are encouraged to perform simple acts of kindness in his memory throughout the year. It quickly made international news, with fans of the program and his philosophy adopting the day. Fred Rogers was born March 20, 1928, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and died February 27, 2003, in Pittsburg. Mr. Roger's Neighborhood aired on American Public Television from 1968 until 2001. Most children born after 1963 have grown up with him (including this writer, who remembers it as one of her favorite shows as a child—along with "Scooby Doo" and "I Love Lucy" reruns). An ordained Presbyterian minister, his entire life's work was devoted to children and children's issues. He often tackled complex subjects such as death, divorce, and death in a way children could relate to and understand. Above all, he focused on building children up and helping them navigate a complicated life.
