Unmasking the Cybersecurity Workforce Shortfall: US Senate Initiates National Cybersecurity Education Month In response to the escalating prevalence of cyber threats, the United States Senate has designated June "National Cybersecurity Education Month." This initiative acknowledges the importance of cybersecurity knowledge and the need for a more robust workforce to tackle the growing cyber challenges. As the world becomes increasingly connected, the likelihood of cyberattacks threatening individuals and organizations increases, impacting the nation's security and prosperity. The pressing urgency to develop and maintain a proficient cybersecurity workforce remains a priority in the public and private sectors. According to data from CyberSeek.org, as of June 2022, there are over 714,000 unfilled jobs in the cybersecurity field in the US, despite a workforce of more than a million individuals. This significant gap showcases the importance of dedicated efforts to cultivate this sector, as proposed in a 2017 report by the Secretaries of Commerce and Homeland Security. Efforts to bolster the cybersecurity workforce must begin early. Implementing cybersecurity education across K-12 classrooms is critical to addressing the workforce shortage and equipping the nation for ongoing and future threats. Not only does this provide learning and career opportunities for students, but it also strengthens the domestic workforce's capacity to secure the nation's economy and defense. In support of this vision, Congress authorized the Cybersecurity Education Training Assistance Program (CETAP), a Homeland Security initiative, as part of the 2021 William M. (Mac) Thornberry National Defense Authorization Act. CETAP aims to provide cybersecurity career awareness, curricular resources, and professional development to elementary and secondary schools. CETAP grantee CYBER.ORG has already introduced cybersecurity concepts to over 3.4 million students and provided resources to more than 25,000 K-12 educators across all 50 States and four US territories. Moreover, the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) champions the mission to promote and coordinate a robust community advancing an integrated cybersecurity education, training, and workforce development ecosystem. Several federal programs support cybersecurity education, including the NICE Community Coordinating Council, the Advanced Technological Education program, and the CyberCorps: Scholarship for Service Program. Efforts extend from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense to the Department of Labor's Registered Apprenticeship Program. By ensuring access to cybersecurity education for all students, irrespective of their race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sex, or geographic location, the Senate aims to expand opportunities for high-earning jobs in this high-demand field.

LGBTQ+ Pride Month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Riots in Manhattan, New York. This month, throughout the United States, pride parades, workshops, symposiums, and concerts focus on the LGBT experience. Memorials occur for those who lost the battle against HIV. The Stonewall Riot occurred at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, in Greenwich, New York, in June 1969. Before the Stonewall Riot, authorities raided gay and lesbian bars across the country under the impression that the said bars were violating the local liquor ban. Arrested and named in the dailies, many patrons experienced dire consequences. However, in June 1969, patrons of Stonewall Inn resisted police harassment, which led to a movement that encouraged outlawing practices against the LGBT community. In 1998, President Clinton signed Executive Order 13087 promoting equal opportunity for gays and lesbians via Federal government organizations. Proclamation 7316 was declared in June 2000, making Gay and Lesbian Pride Month officially recognized by the US government. On June 1, 2009, President Obama issued Proclamation No 8387, changing the name to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. The President noted the contributions of the LGBT community to the progress of anti-discrimination based on sexual orientation and the initiatives they promoted that curtailed the HIV pandemic.

Hip Dysplasia Awareness Month: June

Eight infants a day are diagnosed with hip dysplasia in Australia. Despite this, the likelihood of a parent being aware of the condition is only 57 percent. This limited awareness contributes to the rising number of those diagnosed late with this potentially life-changing condition. Hip dysplasia, or developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), occurs when the ball and socket do not fit together in their 'normal' position. Sometimes this is due to abnormal development and lack of hip joint growth. It can result in months — and sometimes years — of medical treatment. Left undiagnosed, it's one of the leading causes of early-onset arthritis of the hip and, possibly, the need for a hip replacement; it is a significant public health issue. Treatment is optimized when diagnosis occurs within the first three months of life. During International Hip Dysplasia Awareness Month, parents and parents-to-be are urged to educate themselves about the risk factors for and potential signs of hip dysplasia, and to ensure their children's hips are checked not only at birth but at 1-4 weeks, 6-8 weeks, 6-9 months, 12-months, and then at regular health reviews until 3.5 years of age.
