Candlemas, the "Purification of the Blessed Virgin" or the "Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple," occurs forty days after Christmas on the second of February. According to the Mosaic (Hebrew) Law, a mother who has given birth to a male child is considered unclean for seven days; moreover, she is to remain three and thirty days "in the blood of her purification;" for a female child, the time of exclusion doubles. When the time (forty or eighty days) is over, the mother was to "bring to the temple a lamb for a holocaust and a young pigeon or turtle dove for sin" to sacrifice; if she is unable to offer a lamb, she is to take two turtle doves or two pigeons; With these offerings, the priest would pray for her, and she is considered cleansed. (Leviticus 12:2-8) Forty days after the birth of Christ, Mary complied with the law. Car Insurance Day (1897): February 1

Traveler's Insurance issued the first auto insurance policy in 1897 to Gilbert J. Loomis, who built a one-cylinder car. Why does this day fall on February 1, and most online sources list the year as 1898? A phone call clears up the lack of fact-checking in the internet echo chamber. February 1 is when the second policy went into effect. Who was first? According to the historian at Traveler's Insurance, the company believed that the policy issued to Dr. Truman Martin of Buffalo, New York, on February 1, 1898, was its first auto policy for over sixty years. Then one day in 1956, eighty-plus-year-old Gilbert J. Loomis notified Traveler's the date of the first policy needed to be revised. Rather than New York and Mr. Martin, Ohio granted the first auto coverage to him. His policy with Travelers, dated 1897, which he brought to the headquarters, made Loomis the first to have auto insurance. The actual date is likely in October or November, not February, as once believed. Unfortunately, the date Travelers enacted his policy in 1897 is still being determined, and nobody made a copy of the historical document when the record was amended in 1956. When did mandatory car insurance begin? That started across the pond. The United Kingdom is responsible for compulsory car insurance for licensed drivers and owners of vehicles. The British Parliament passed the Road Traffic Act in 1930 after a heated debate in the House of Lords held in January of that year. Now you know where that annoying monthly bill comes from and the misclassification of its origin. The moral of the story? Always double-check what the insurance company tells you!

Greeting cards first appeared in China and Egypt over 2,000 years ago to send greetings during celebrations like the Chinese New Year. By the 15th century, Europeans began exchanging cards made of paper, wood, and other materials. The oldest existing greeting card is a Valentine sent during the 1400s. Fast forward to 1843, three years after the introduction of the first postage stamp. Sir Henry Cole saw an opportunity in Victorian England and created the first commercially available Christmas Cards. The same year Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol. Christmas Cards and greeting cards were sold on a mass scale beginning in the early 20th century. They were still costly for the average person until 1910 when Joyce C Hall started his first card business with a shoe box full of cards. By 1912 his brothers joined him, and the business grew. By the 1920s, most people could afford cards, and in 1928 the company began marketing cards under the Hallmark Name. And the rest is history. National Card Reading Day is an unofficial holiday with no sponsor.
