Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day, Intl.: February 23

We're unable to determine why today is International Dog Biscuit Day, but we suspect it might relate to the day the first patent on dog biscuits was filed in 1860, as there is no correlation to the birth or death of the inventors. Unfortunately, the UK Historical Patent Office only has patents going back to 1890 in their database, so we'll have to leave proving that theory for another year. Dog Biscuits: a Short History Romans began feeding dogs scraps from the table, stale bread, and other treats. The term dog biscuit originated during the 16th or 17th century in Europe. In 1809 Filt Bennett mixed milk, minerals, and meat together to form the first dog biscuit. He did sell them, but nowhere at scale, so Filt Bennett doesn't get the credit for the biscuits we know today. Credit, instead, goes to James Spratt of Cincinnati, Ohio, who, while in England in 1860, introduced the first commercially produced dog biscuit: Spratt's Patent Meat Fibrine Dog Cakes made of wheat, beetroot, vegetables, and beef blood. Yum? In 1907 things changed again. Fredrick H. Bennett repackaged the dog biscuits into the shape of a bone, calling them 'Maltoid Milk Bones.' They were a tremendous success, and he went from pauper to millionaire rather quickly simply by reshaping the end product. In 1931, the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) bought his company. The rest is history.

Galgos are an ancient breed of sighthound used in competitions and hunting hares (wild rabbits). Unlike greyhounds, galgos are built for distance running rather than speed. They're relatively quiet dogs that do well with other dogs. In Spain, hunters see them as disposable tools. Their owners frequently discard or kill the dogs after the hunting season ends on February first rather than care for and feed them, especially if they are over three years old or injured. Galgos are wonderful family dogs and companions that get along well with other animals and dogs. Día del Galgo is an international awareness and fundraising campaign promoted by Galgos del Sol. The global captive dolphin trade is responsible for Taiji's brutal dolphin hunts to take place worldwide. Every year Sea Shepherd's Cove Guardians have patrolled the Taiji cove, where entire families of cetaceans are driven into the cove and either kidnapped and sold into captivity or ruthlessly killed at a tremendous profit. "Our utmost desire is to see a day when captivity is completely abolished, and these beautiful, intelligent beings are allowed to roam free throughout the world's oceans instead of being put into tiny tanks and forced to perform tricks just to get their next meal," said David Hance, Chief Operating Officer for Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. "Please join Sea Shepherd on February 14th as we stand up against captivity and against those companies that help perpetuate this horrific industry," added Hance.

They would then sing and dance, celebrating the end of the harsh winter. It was common for romantic relationships to begin on this day. Romanians believed participation in Dragobete customs ensured happiness and love for the entire year or protection from illness for the rest of the year. Single women hoping to marry in the year ahead sought to encounter a man on Dragobete to ensure good luck in love throughout the year.
