Bank Holiday (AU-NSW): August 4

06:20 AM | -
The first Monday of August in New South Wales, Australia, is a bank holiday. Bank employees celebrate their hard work and contribution to our modern society. All banks in New South Wales are closed on this day, and bank workers use this free Monday to extend their weekend and either go on a well-deserved vacation or just rest and take a break.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, Ntl.: August 4

06:20 AM | -
National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day celebrates chocolate chip cookies. Ruth Graves Wakefield created chocolate chip cookies in Massachusetts in 1938. She broke a Nestle chocolate bar into pieces and added the chips to her cookie recipe. Because of the recipe's popularity, Nestle agreed to print the recipe on the back of the chocolate bar. By 1940, Nestle began selling chocolate chip packs.

Clouded Leopard Day, Int.: August 4

06:20 AM | -
Clouded Leopard Day is an awareness day dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness about the clouded leopard, a beautiful and elusive wild cat native to the forests of Southeast Asia. The day aims to educate people about the unique characteristics of the clouded leopard, the threats it faces, and the conservation efforts needed to protect its habitat and population. The clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) is a medium-sized wild cat known for its distinctive coat pattern of large cloud-like markings. They are skilled climbers with long tails for balance and can rotate their hind legs, enabling them to climb down trees headfirst. Their habitat ranges from the Himalayan foothills to mainland Southeast Asia and parts of China. Unfortunately, clouded leopards face significant threats due to habitat loss, deforestation, and illegal wildlife trade. Their elusive nature and limited distribution make it challenging for researchers to gather accurate data on their population status. However, their numbers are declining, and the species is currently listed as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Dental Health Week (AU): August 4-10

06:20 AM | -
The Australian Dental Association champions Dental Health Week. The week is its major annual oral health promotion aiming to educate Australians about the importance of maintaining whole mouth health. 65% of Australians haven’t seen a dentist in the last two years. 50% of Australians brush their teeth only once a day. Nearly 40% never floss nor clean between their teeth. 73% of young people (14-18 years) consume too much sugar. Dental Health Week promotes these key messages: Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Clean in between teeth at least once a day with floss or an interdental brush. Eat a healthy balanced diet and limit sugar intake. Regularly visit the dentist for check-ups and preventive treatment.

Fiddlers' Convention, Old (US-VA): August 4-9 (est)

06:20 AM | -

THE OLD FIDDLERS' CONVENTION

APPALACHIAN MUSIC AT ITS BEST

The Old Fiddlers' Convention is the world's oldest and largest gathering of traditional and bluegrass musicians. First held in the spring of 1935 by members of Moose Lodge #733 to raise funds and promote their lodge, the convention's mission from the outset was "keeping alive the memories and sentiments of days gone by and make it possible for people of today to hear and enjoy the tunes of yesterday."

Each year, the event draws more than 30,000 attendees—quadrupling the roughly 7,000 residents of Galax—as musicians and fans converge for concerts, contests, and camaraderie. Contestants—ranging from solo fiddlers and banjo players to full old-time and bluegrass bands—must register fee-free in advance. Competition categories include both individual and group performances, with cash prizes totaling thousands of dollars. Camping onsite is another popular draw for attendees.

The convention distinguishes itself by its organic atmosphere featuring staged performances and late-night jam sessions around campsites, where musicians, dancers, and listeners intermingle freely. This informal vibe forms a potent part of its cultural significance.

Its importance lies in preserving and fostering the intergenerational transmission of traditional Appalachian music. With the addition of youth divisions in 2000, children and teens now perform alongside seasoned players, reaffirming the event's role in cultural continuity. Coverage by NBC in 1967, presidential recognition, and acclaim as one of the Southeast's top events further underscore its cultural weight.

Though rooted in Virginia, the convention attracts participants from across the U.S. and abroad—from Norway to Australia—reinforcing its international influence. The Old Fiddlers' Convention remains a living testament to the enduring power of traditional mountain music—one tune at a time.

Owl Day, International: August 4

06:20 AM | -
International Owl Awareness Day celebrates the winged messenger of wisdom, the owl. There are 236 known species of owls, falling into two families, the Tytonidae and Strigidae. Thirteen owls are currently on the critical or endangered species list, including the Pernambuco Pygmy Owl and Siau Scops Owl, both with fewer than 50 remaining. A large owl can consume over 2,000 rodents, fish, and small animals annually, making them essential for pest control. Smaller owls keep the insect population under control, and the birds of prey live on six of seven continents. The largest species is the Blakiston's Fish Owl, with a wingspan of 6.5 feet (1.98 meters) and weighing over eight pounds (3.6 kilograms). The smallest owl is the Long-whiskered Owlets, with a wingspan of 4.1 -4.6 inches (10 - 11.5 centimeters) and weighing less than 2 ounces (0.06 kilograms).

Picnic Day (AU): August 4

06:20 AM | -
Railway Heritage Picnic Day, or simply Picnic Day, is celebrated in Australia's Northern Territory and coincides with official bank holidays in the UK, selected provinces, and commonwealth countries. Australia's Northern Territory's Railway Heritage Picnic Day marks the freeing of indentured Chinese laborers, at the time referred to as Coolie (British slang for Asian indentured servant), were under contract with the North Australia Railway. Like in the United States, much of the railway track was laid by Chinese laborers; it was backbreaking work, and many did not survive. In 1888, after completing the first part of the railway, the Governor of the Southern Territories reversed its policy of requiring Asian workers to leave Australia upon job completion. Instead, he gave them a choice, to return home or become part of Australian culture. Upon being granted freeman status, many Asian laborers chose to stay in Australia and build a life. How did the former indentured servants celebrate? They had a picnic in Adelaide, thus Picnic Day!
