April is National Parkinson's Awareness Month in the United States. In the United Kingdom, Parkinson's Awareness Week occurs during the week of World Parkinson's Disease Day, mid-month. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive movement disorder, meaning symptoms continue and worsen over time. Nearly one million people in the US are living with Parkinson's disease. The cause is unknown, and although there is no cure, there are treatment options such as medication and surgery to manage its symptoms. Shabbat HaGadol, or the "Great Shabbat," is the Saturday celebrated immediately after Passover. Shabbat is "Sabbath" or "Saturday" in Hebrew. A Haftarah from the Book of Malachi is read on this day, a long and traditional sermon given in the afternoon. The Jewish Shabbat begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sunset on Saturday. PLEASE NOTE: All Hebrew calendar months and celebrations begin and end at sundown. LEEP Calendar marks Jewish months and events on their first full day. Observant people of the faith will observe the beginning at sunset the day prior.

National Submarine Day in the United States marks the anniversary of the US Navy’s acquisition of its first modern submarine, the Holland VI, on April 11, 1900. The Holland VI is not the first submarine to fight for the United States, however. The USS Alligator was deployed on June 13, 1862, during the American Civil War by Union forces and foundered on April 2, 1863. It was the fourth American naval vessel to carry its name. Prior to this, Colonial forces during the Revolutionary War used a human-powered submersible vehicle called the Turtle to wage war against the British Navy in New York harbor in 1776. The Turtle was the first submersible vehicle used in combat.

HISTORY AND OBJECTIVE Global Youth Service Day was established in 1988 by Youth Service America (YSA), an organization dedicated to increasing the number and diversity of young people engaged in volunteer service. Recognizing young volunteers' growing impact and enthusiasm, YSA expanded the event to a month-long celebration in 2000, creating Global Youth Service Month. This extension provides more opportunities for young people to participate and for communities to recognize their contributions. The primary objective of Global Youth Service Month is to highlight and support the power of young people to create positive change in their communities and the world. It aims to promote youth engagement, foster a sense of civic responsibility, and inspire a lifelong commitment to service. In doing so, it seeks to address critical issues such as poverty, education, health, and the environment while empowering the next generation of leaders. Global Youth Service Month involves diverse participants, including young people, schools, community organizations, nonprofits, and businesses. Participation spans over 100 countries, engaging millions of young volunteers in various service projects and activities. Big Wind Day (1934): April 12

Today is the anniversary of the highest recorded wind gust felt by man in history, a record that stood for 62 years until 1996. It was in Mount Washington, New Hampshire, on April 12, 1934, that a wind gust of 231 miles per hour was recorded by staff at the Mount Washington Observatory. In 1996, during Typhoon Olivia, an unmanned station on Barrow Island in Australia clocked a wind gust at 253 miles per hour. Mount Washington continues to hold the record for the fastest wind gust experienced by man. The Barrow Island gust was recorded by machinery, not man.

Passover, or Pesach, falls on the Hebrew calendar dates of Nissan 23-30 and is a week-long celebration. In the Gregorian calendar, the dates vary from year-to-year. Passover is an important Jewish holiday straight from the Torah and Bible. It commemorates the Hebrew people's liberation by God from Egyptian slavery and the formation of their nation (a collective of people, not a nation-state) under the leadership of Moses. It is called Passover because the Angel of Death passed over the homes of Hebrew slaves marked with lamb's blood on this night. The firstborn of non-Hebrews were killed as a warning to Pharaoh in homes not marked. This final plague of ten convinced Pharaoh to free the Hebrews from slavery. Christians also mark Passover as part of Passiontide, but it is a single day. However, Christians do not follow the rituals of Judaism in observing Passover.
