Father Damian Day (1889): April 15

Father Damien Day recognizes Father Damien, born Jozef De Veuster in Belgium on January 3, 1840. He was a Roman Catholic priest who spent much of his life living and working on the Hawaiian island of Moloka'i. He dedicated his days to helping those who lived with leprosy and were ostracized by the larger society. The government forced them to live in quarantine. After providing much-needed spiritual, emotional, and physical support for the needy and sick, Father Damien died of leprosy in 1889. The Roman Catholic Church made him a saint for his lifelong dedication to humanity and all his work.

Jackie Robinson Day (1947): April 15

Jackie Robinson Day honors the major league debut of the first African American player in the Major Leagues on April 15, 1947. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers (today's Los Angeles Dodgers). His addition to the team marked the end of nearly eighty years of segregation in baseball. Jackie Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. Jackie Robinson Day began in 2004.

Kroc revolutionized the fast food industry by applying assembly line principles to food cooking and serving. McDonald's also pioneered marketing to children through parents.

Eggs Benedict Day celebrates the luxury breakfast known as Eggs Benedict. Eggs Benedict is a poached egg with Canadian bacon on an English muffin topped with hollandaise sauce. The dish was created in the kitchen of the Waldorf Hotel by Wall Street broker Lemuel Benedict in 1894 to cure his hangover.

Emancipation Day (1862): April 16

Emancipation Day marks the anniversary in 1862 when President Abraham Lincoln signed an executive order freeing the 3,100 slaves living in Washington, DC, one of the first steps in ending legal slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation Act of January 1, 1863, is the final document that ended the legal practice of slavery in the US. However, it would continue in the Southern States until the end of the Civil War on May 9, 1865, and until the final group of slaves in Texas learned they were free on June 19, forty days later.
