International Dark Sky Week (IDSA) is an Astronomy event organized by the International Dark-Sky Association. The mission of the IDSA is to protect the night skies in the present and for future generations against light pollution and its negative effect on nocturnal birds and animals. Excess light during the night has the potential to destroy entire ecosystems. Additionally, much of the light used to illuminate cities is unnecessary, thus a waste of energy. High school student Jennifer Barlow created this event in 2003. It occurs during the week encompassing the new moon in April.

Easter, with its traditional Easter egg hunts, bolsters that number. What do you do with a couple of dozen hard-boiled eggs? Make egg salad, of course! An egg salad requires only a few ingredients: eggs, mayo, diced onion, lemon juice, salt, & pepper. For those who don’t like mayo, try sour cream mixed with cream cheese can be used instead. Enjoy!

Kindergarten Day in the United States and Germany commemorates the birthday of Friedrich Froebe (April 21, 1782 - June 21, 1852), the founder of the first kindergarten. Froebe first conceived the idea of a kindergarten in Blankenburg, Germany, in 1837. As a teacher, he believed education is better through play and experience, easing the learning transition from home to formal school. He founded the first kindergarten that year in Germany. Despite being popular internationally, the Prussian government banned kindergarten until 1851. The first kindergarten in the United States opened in Saint Louis in 1873.
