Adult Day Services Week: September 15-21

National Adult Day Services Week is an awareness campaign designed to educate the country on the services and advantages of adult day centers. Adult day centers serve the elderly by hosting social events, transitional care, and short-term rehabilitation following hospital discharge. Adult day centers are an interactive, safe and secure environment for participants requiring supervised daily care as a preferred platform for chronic disease management. While nearly half of all participants nationally have some level of dementia, other common chronic diseases include chronic hypertension, physical disability, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental illness, and developmental disability. Adult day services provide a reliable source of support, restore balance in times of crisis, and enhance caregivers' overall quality of life. Former President Ronald Reagan proclaimed National Adult Day Services Week on September 27, 1983; it occurs during the third complete week of September each year.

Battle of Britain Day (UK) (1940): September 15

Battle of Britain marks the turning point of the 4 month attack by Nazi Germany on England. The battle occurred during the summer and fall of 1940. By this time, World War II approached its first anniversary, and Hitler's forces had over-run much of Europe. Britain was the final prize he wanted, and he set his sights on the island nation. Up until this time, the German military appeared to be unstoppable. Hitler believed the air assault on Britain in July of 1940 would be easy. However, the English had a secret weapon, the Dowding System, which allowed the Brits to deploy their air force throughout the country, back by radar. The Dowding System provided early warning of attacks, allowing the Royal Air Force to engage the Luftwaffe effectively. On September 7, London became the target of the bombing campaigns. By September 15, 1940, the British Royal Air Force got the upper hand. Though the battle would continue into October, today is the day it became clear to the German high command that taking Britain would require more resources and time. They eventually withdrew, and Hitler's forces never conquered Britain. Within 14 months, the United States would enter the war.

E-commerce Days, Intl. Women's: September 15-21

International Women's E-commerce Days is a global online initiative designed to get women to use their purchasing power and shop online. Hundreds of e-commerce sites around the world participate with specials and incentives. Do you remember the first purchase you made online? For this writer, it was paying a bill (cell phone or cable, I cannot recall), but I was already trying to sell the concept to small businesses in Seattle in November 1995. Working for a radio station (KZOK, the 5th radio station in the world to go online), one of the marketing tools I had to sell was online advertising and web development. A men's store in Seattle specialized in bespoke and off-the-rack suites for men 5'6" and shorter. The owner confirmed my assumption that many of his customers were Asians on business trips from China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Except for Korea and Northern China, I knew the average height of men from these regions would be closer to the 5'6" he catered to, rather than the then-average American male height of 5'10". Over the course of several visits, I attempted to convince him to try online commerce, insisting that it was especially suited for custom and hard-to-find items and international trade. At the same time as I tried to convince the owner of the merits of e-commerce. Nearby, a house in Seattle was brimming with activity as Jeff Bezos launched and built Amazon. I never did convince the men's suit retailer to go online; by April of 1996, I'd left the radio station in Seattle and moved to Los Angeles. There I worked with many emerging companies, including eToys, Amazon, iAgency, and Earthlink. Los Angeles was a magical place as a young adult during the last half of the 90s. The internet was taking off, and investment capital, ideas, and excitement were everywhere. Anything was possible. Industry parties, industry spectaculars, there were at least 3-4 a week. It was a fusion of entertainment and technology, and everyone wanted a part. By this point, Amazon was a known name. Google came on the scene to challenge Netscape, AOL and Yahoo!; e-commerce was still unproven, and fears of stolen credit card information needed to be addressed. Amazon would eventually prove e-commerce was the future. Later, China's Alibaba would stun the world with $25.4 billion in sales on a single day: 11/11/2017. Even more shocking, 90% of those sales came from mobile devices, which had only existed for ten years. E-commerce had come into its own, and women led the way. Yes, women like to shop, but we're also responsible for many e-commerce platforms and stores you shop for today. In addition to spending money, honor the women behind the businesses and the creative minds that came up with the concepts and provide jobs for thousands of people worldwide.

Factory farms are commercial agricultural operations that raise massive numbers of animals to produce meat and other animal products for sale. Animals are housed indoors with minimal food, water, or space, and veterinary care minimizes costs and maximizes production. The National Humane Education Society wishes to raise awareness of the issues surrounding farm animals' lives, and national Farm Animals Awareness Week promotes this cause. National Macadamia Nut Day honors the macadamia nut, which originated in Australia. Named after the chemist John Macadam (May 29, 1827 – September 2, 1865), who cultivated the nuts in Australia, macadamia nuts have many benefits, including being high in mono-unsaturated fats and dietary fiber. People eat macadamia nuts or include them in their baking to celebrate this day. Curiously, this day seems to fall on September 4 each year when the anniversary of the death of the nut’s namesake is on September 2. So much for logic.

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Awareness Day seeks to teach the public and keep medical professionals informed about this genetic disease. As a person ages, symptoms worsen, and fluid-filled cysts form and enlarge both kidneys, often leading to kidney failure. There are two types of PKD: Autosomal Dominant PKD (ADPKD) in adults and Autosomal Recessive PKD (ARPKD) in children. This rare disease affects 1 in 20,000 people worldwide and occurs if both parents carry the gene. Most people with it will develop kidney failure before reaching age 60. Currently, there is no cure, and the disease does not skip generations.
