January is Glaucoma Awareness Month in the United States. According to the World Health Organization, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. Eye diseases gradually steal sight without warning by damaging the optic nerve. Although the most common forms primarily affect the middle-aged and the elderly, glaucoma can affect people of all ages. Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness among African-Americans, Hispanics, and the elderly. Siblings of persons diagnosed with glaucoma have a significantly increased risk. There is no cure for glaucoma yet. However, medication or surgery can slow or prevent further vision loss. In its most common form, there are virtually no symptoms. Vision loss begins with a peripheral or side vision, so if you have glaucoma, you may not notice anything until significant vision is lost. The best way to protect your sight from glaucoma is to get a comprehensive eye examination. Then, if you have glaucoma, treatment can begin immediately. Spend this month educating yourself and your family about glaucoma, and if it’s been a while since your last visit to the eye doctor, schedule a visit this month.

National Human Trafficking Awareness & Prevention Month is an initiative of ECPAT-USA, an association of travel and entertainment companies that seeks to protect every child’s fundamental human right to grow up free from the threat of sexual exploitation and trafficking. The primary objectives of this organization and the month are to: 1) Advocate for federal and state legislation that prevents exploitation, protects children and guarantees that children subjected to sexual slavery or sex trafficking will not face prosecution in court for prostitution. 2) Promote corporate responsibility among private companies with a strong focus on tourism. 3) Educate first responders and ordinary citizens about this issue so that they can identify victims and join us in the fight to protect children better. 4) Empower youth to take the lead against human trafficking by equipping them with the knowledge and tools necessary to help them become activists against this terrible trade.

Historically linked to tobacco and alcohol use, new associations link it to the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is on the rise. Head and neck cancers and their treatment can profoundly impact patient quality of life, as facial appearance, voice, breathing, and swallowing can all be compromised. Survival with contemporary treatment consisting of radiation, surgery, and chemotherapy can be successful; however, up to 50% of patients with advanced cancers die from the disease.

This Bohemian dance, the polka, originated in the early nineteenth century in today's Czech Republic. Legend states that a teenager named Anna Slezak invented the polka in 1834.
